FEDERAL WAY — Federal Way did not do much on the ground against Kentridge on Thursday night. But when the Eagles needed someone to run the ball with the game on the line, Andre Barrington stepped up.
Barrington scored on a 2-yard run in overtime to lift 10th-ranked Federal Way to a 27-21 victory over Kentridge in a South Puget Sound League 4A showdown of teams tied for first place in the North Division.
Federal Way (7-1 overall, 6-0 league) will be the top seed for the playoffs and has earned at least a share of the North title — the school's first football title since 1976.
Kentridge (5-3, 4-2) missed a chance for a division title but will still likely end up in the playoffs.
"We were all tired down the stretch, but we knew we had to hang on," said Federal Way linebacker Andru Pulu. "This was too big of a game for us to quit. We wanted that No. 1 seed."
Federal Way rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the third quarter and tied the game when quarterback Justin Southern hit Aaron Broussard on a 68-yard TD strike with 6:01 left in regulation.
In overtime, Kentridge quarterback Brandon Turner (206 yards rushing and three touchdowns) fumbled the ball away at the 11-yard line. It was a tough finish for Turner, who ran wild and also passed for 63 yards.
After the Eagles were called for holding on first down, Southern passed 30 yards to Alex Dorland to the Kentridge 5. After a roughing-the-passer penalty put the ball on the 2, Barrington ran for the winning score.
Federal Way was held to minus-19 yards rushing. Barrington, one of the top runners in the league, finished with 25 yards on 14 carries.
"We had them where we wanted, we just didn't finish the deal," said Kentridge coach Marty Osborn. "We did some good things and shut down their running game. We just didn't get the big play when we needed it."
Southern had a big night, connecting on 13 of 19 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown.
