Five Garfield High School football players arrested two weeks ago on suspicion of robbery assault will be in uniform today when the Bulldogs host Eastlake in a KingCo 4A Conference game at 5 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
Coach Anthony Allen, who suspended the players two weeks ago, said a team meeting Tuesday played a large part in the players' return.
"Some kids said, 'We just think if you kick them out of the program, is that what's best for them to become better students and better people?' " Allen said. "That had a lot to do with it. The kids think that we should give them a chance."
The players, four of them starters, were arrested Sept. 13 on suspicion of committing two assaults, one during an attempted robbery Sept. 10 and the other during a robbery Sept. 12 in which police say a laptop, an iPod and cash were stolen. The players, who have not been booked or charged, were suspended for Garfield's past two games, a 34-0 loss to Franklin and a 48-0 loss to Bothell.
"For the past 13 days this is all I've thought about," Allen said. "Every day, all day.
"The biggest thing with me was just watching the kids and seeing how remorseful they really were. You can see it in their eyes they were crushed. They should have been, for what they've done.
"I told them now that they owe their team and they owe Garfield and they owe the staff."
Allen said the players' playing status could change if they are charged or convicted.
The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association has no policy regarding athletes who have been arrested, charged or convicted, leaving those decisions to school officials.
