Justin Mann, Woodinville football
Mann, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound senior defensive tackle, made three sacks for 17 yards in losses in a 27-6 win over Ballard. He also had six solo tackles and an assist. Two of his sacks and three of his tackles forced fourth downs.
Kelly Tannhauser, Juanita swimming
Tannhauser, a sophomore, opened the season with three state-qualifying times in a KingCo 4A dual meet against Ballard. She won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 12.32 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 54.54, and led off the qualifying 200 medley relay (1:53.86).
Mercer Island volleyball team
The Islanders, coached by Dino Annest, followed last season's eighth-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament by opening this season 2-0. After beating Seattle Prep 3-0, Mercer Island defeated 4A state contender Bothell 3-1.
