Brandon Turner thought it was going to be easy.
The senior found out the hard way how wrong he was Saturday as his fifth-ranked Kentridge football team struggled to a 14-6 victory over Inglemoor in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at Qwest Field.
The athletic Turner, debuting at quarterback for the first time since his sophomore year, had to work for his 70 yards rushing on 21 carries, including a 5-yard touchdown. He paid the price while completing 8 of 17 passes for 72 yards with two interceptions, taking several hits.
"I felt like I took a beating," said Turner, who was a big-play receiver last season. "They played more physical than we expected."
The unveiling of what was expected to be a high-octane, spread offense pretty much smoldered at the start. Turner's early passing line was 1 for 4 with one interception and zero yards. His first five carries produced a 2 yards. He was more surprised than anyone at Inglemoor's defense, anchored by linebacker Paul Ena. Kentridge's first three possessions ended in a fumble, interception and punt.
"I just felt like they were going to roll over, to be honest with you," Turner said. "I had to calm myself down and relax. I just needed to get my feet wet a little bit, and after that we did fine."
The Vikings took a 6-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter on a heads-up play by Ian Quinn, who picked up a fumble by teammate Alex Stanford at the 2-yard line and carried it across.
"The ball wasn't doing anything, just sitting there, so I thought I'd pick it up," said a grinning Quinn, who also had an interception and three catches for 61 yards.
The conversion kick hit an upright and Kentridge dominated from there, with Turner's score and an Alex Ferguson 1-yard TD burst.
