Demetrius Bronson, a running back at Kentwood High School, has verbally committed to play for Washington in 2008, according to a report on Realdawg.com, an unofficial Huskies news site.
Bronson, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior, is considered one of the state's top running backs.
As a junior, he rushed 182 times for 1,437 yards and 14 touchdowns in the regular season, averaging almost 160 yards per game. Kentwood lost to eventual Class 4A state champion Oak Harbor in a state qualifier.
As a sophomore, Bronson rushed for 1,045 yards.
Bronson hopes to cement his reputation as one of the best running backs at a Covington school known for producing some good ones.
Richard Thomas scored 22 regular-season touchdowns for the Conquerors in 1989, before eventually starting as a fullback at Washington. John Gardenhire rushed for back-to-back 1,600-yard seasons in 1999 and 2000. And Will Thompson set a school record with 2,015 yards in 2001.
Bronson's older brother John, a Kent-Meridian graduate, played for Penn State and is now in his third year with the Arizona Cardinals.
His sister Leitawsha, a 2004 Kent-Meridian grad, was a two-sport star who played basketball at Morgan State.
