4A Boys Soccer | Federal Way gets shootout victory

Special to The Seattle Times

FEDERAL WAY — After having shot after shot get deflected or saved, Murphy Campbell finally got one past the keeper for his biggest goal of the season.

His winning shot in an overtime shootout triggered a mass celebration as Federal Way defeated Evergreen of Vancouver 2-1 in a first-round Class 4A boys soccer state-playoff game at Federal Way Stadium Tuesday night.

The shootout was tied 4-4 when Campbell, a junior midfielder, put one past Plainsmen keeper Jordan Aragon.

"I was pretty confident taking that shot," Campbell said. "I liked the pressure."

The Eagles (14-1-4) advanced to the quarterfinals against district rival Beamer. Federal Way defeated Beamer last week for the SPSL championship.

Before the shootout, most of Federal Way's shots were saved or deflected by Aragon. Aragon had 12 saves.

"He's probably the biggest goalkeeper we've seen this season," Campbell said. "We kept shooting shot after shot, and he kept deflecting them."

The Eagles scored first on a goal by Kelyn Rowe in the 67th minute. Evergreen (10-5-4) tied it in the 76th minute on a penalty kick by Rubi Beltran.

Freshman keeper Eddie Gomez stopped Evergreen's third kick of the shootout. Gomez came into the game late in the first half after starting keeper Vinton Lane was kicked in the knee and helped off the field.

"He made a great save," Federal Way coach Jason Baumgardt said. "I told him, 'There's no pressure on you in the penalty kicks, do the best you can. You're not expected to save any of them.' But he came up huge."
