Metro Boys Roundup | Bainbridge denies Sealth in OT

Special to The Seattle Times

In the first half, Coby Gibler couldn't miss. The Bainbridge senior post cooled off eventually, but at the end of regulation, with the game on the line, Gibler came through again.

The 6-foot-9 Gibler nailed a long two-point jumper with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and the second-ranked Spartans pulled away for a 77-68 win over No. 4 Chief Sealth on Friday night.

Gibler's tying shot capped a comeback that brought the Spartans (10-1 overall, 7-0 league) back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit. Chief Sealth (9-1, 6-1) made a comeback of its own to take the lead.

After the Spartans took control of the game early behind the hot shooting of Gibler and everyone else in blue, the Seahawks stormed back from an 11-point second-quarter deficit with a 21-3 run that stretched into the third quarter.

"This game was such a game of momentum and changes," said Bainbridge coach Scott Orness. "We just happened to luck out that our momentum came at the end of the game."

That momentum carried over into overtime, as the Spartans built a quick, six-point lead — all on free throws. Senior guard Steven Gray scored eight of his 23 points in the extra period.

It was Gibler, however, who stole the spotlight from the Gonzaga-bound Gray, leading the Spartans with 28 points, 18 rebounds and nine blocks. He started the game by making his first five shots.

"In the first half, it felt like I couldn't miss," he said. "I felt like I could make anything. It was just going good."

Melvin Jones led the Seahawks with 28 points.
