DUVALL — Flooding forced Cedarcrest High School to wait two days to play its girls soccer state-playoff match. When the rain let up and the Snoqualmie River finally receded a little, the Red Wolves let loose.
Unbeaten Cedarcrest poured in four goals in the first 27 minutes and beat visiting Steilacoom 5-0 Thursday in a Class 2A first-round match originally scheduled for Tuesday. The Red Wolves rained 35 shots on goal.
Cedarcrest (20-0) earned a spot in the quarterfinals against Ridgefield at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tumwater Stadium. Ridgefield beat Ephrata 3-2 in the Spudders' first-round match.
If they Saturday, the Red Wolves from Duvall will play Cheney or West Valley (Spokane) in the semifinals next week.
Senior forward Amanda Johnson scored her 37th and 38th goals this season, and all 22 players on the Cedarcrest roster played. Goalkeepers Holli Butterfield and Kori Butterfield shared the shutout.
Runners ready for Border Clash
The best high-school cross-country runners from Washington and Oregon will face off Nov. 19 at the eighth annual Border Clash at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
The race features 80 runners — 40 boys and 40 girls — from each state. The girls race starts at 10:30 a.m., and the boys race at 11:15 a.m.
Washington leads the series 5-2.
The 2.76-mile course begins with a "Braveheart"-style start, where runners line up on separate starting lines depending on their state. They charge at each other for the first 100 meters before merging onto the rest of the course.
The top boys runners for Washington include Seattle Prep senior Max O'Donoghue-McDonald, who won his second Class 3A state title Saturday; Ferris (Spokane) senior Cameron Quackenbush, who won the 4A title; Joey Bywater from Lake Stevens, Dak Riek from Mariner; and Matt Frerker from Skyline.
The top girls runners for Washington include Jefferson senior Kenna Patrick, who won the 4A title; Squalicum's Bronwyn Crossman, the 3A champion; Nicole Cochran from Bellarmine Prep and Stephanie Marcy from Sequim.
