Prep Beat: Page hired to coach volleyball at Eastlake

Eastlake High School has hired one of the area's most successful high-school volleyball coaches.

Gaylene Page, who won three consecutive Class 3A state titles in nine years at Seattle Prep, resigned from the private school last November. At the time, she said, "I'm at the point where I feel it's in my best interest to move on."

Page's Seattle Prep teams won 3A state titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Eastlake, a Sammamish school, was 5-9 last season and 4-7 in the KingCo 4A Conference.

Football camp continues

Day 2 of the second annual non-contact football camp at Foster High School for Samoan high-school athletes will start today at 10 a.m. The free camp also is open to non-Samoan athletes. It was held at Chief Sealth High School last year.

Jack Thompson, the "Throwin' Samoan" quarterback of Washington State fame who later played in the NFL, said Samoan NFL players and ex-players are serving as instructors and counselors.

Thompson said today's session will run until 2 p.m., when a free lunch will be served.

State lacrosse finals today

Lacrosse state championships for high-school players will be at stake today at Memorial Stadium. In boys games, Eastlake plays Lynnwood at 12:15 p.m. in the Division II final, and Issaquah faces Mercer Island at 2:20 p.m. in Division I. The girls finals feature Tacoma and Roosevelt in Varsity B at 5 p.m., and Bainbridge and Lakeside in Varsity A at 7 p.m.

Times staff reporter Craig Smith contributed to this report.
