Fastpitch Softball: Archbishop Murphy punches ticket to state

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Kaitlyn Kennedy and Kayelynne Huggins pitched shutouts as Archbishop Murphy claimed a state-tournament berth with a pair of victories in the Northwest 2A District fastpitch softball tournament Thursday at Jackson Park.

Kennedy struck out 10 as the Wildcats beat Meridian 12-0 in five innings in a first-round game. Jaimee Greenup went 2 for 2 with a triple and two runs batted in for Archbishop Murphy.

In the semifinals, Huggins fanned 10 in a four-hitter as Archbishop Murphy blanked Mount Baker 4-0.

The Wildcats (21-0) will face Nooksack Valley of Everson for the district championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at Janicki Fields. Nooksack Valley beat Sultan and Granite Falls on the way to the final.

Archbishop Murphy and Nooksack Valley are assured of two of the district's three state-tournament berths, and will play to decide the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. Granite Falls (13-7) must win two games to capture the tournament's third state berth.
