Recruiting

Huskies land two more football commitments

Seattle Times staff reporter

Cody Habben is staying home.

After considering offers from almost a dozen Division I college football programs, the 6-foot-5, 270-pound tackle from Skyline High School in Sammamish verbally committed to play at Washington.

The senior ended the suspense Wednesday afternoon at a news conference in front of family, coaches and friends, taking off his hooded sweatshirt and unveiling a Huskies T-shirt he'd worn for the occasion.

Habben said he reached his decision Tuesday night, choosing a Washington program that has earned only three victories the past two seasons.

"I just sat down, and thought, 'They can turn it around,' " Habben said. "That's the big reason. Washington can be what it used to be. We start winning again, it'll be nuts."

Habben, who anchored the Spartans' Class 4A state-championship team last fall, chose Washington out of a final list that also included Washington State, Iowa State and Arizona State. Habben's father was an all-conference defensive end in the mid-1980s at Division III Buena Vista College in Iowa. The family has extended family in the Midwest.

Habben was named the KingCo 4A Conference's Offensive Lineman of the Year. He also earned spots on The Seattle Times' all-state team and Star Times all-area team.

Skyline coach Steve Gervais believes Habben's size, agility, advanced pass-blocking skills and growing maturity make him one of the state's top linemen.

"Cody's by no means peaked," Gervais said. "I just see a young man who's going to grow and get bigger and better. He's got a lot in front of him."

Habben's decision means that offensive lineman Stephen Schilling of Bellevue is the last major recruit in the state who hasn't announced where he plans to play.

Note

Habben wasn't the only offensive linemen the Huskies added Wednesday, as they also got a commitment from Matt Sedillo, a 6-3, 300-pounder from Orange Glen High School in Escondido, Calif. Sedillo also took a trip to Weber State and had one planned to Montana State, according Scout.com. He is the Huskies' 17th known commitment.
