Prep roundup: Bellevue's defeat a shock to system

Seattle Times staff reporter

The Bellevue Wolverines are still an overwhelming favorite to win an unprecedented fifth consecutive Class 3A football title. They are still the most dangerous team in the state.

But they woke up Saturday tasting something new, something they haven't known for more than two years: Defeat.

Mighty Bellevue, winners of 30 consecutive games, lost Friday night to Issaquah in a KingCo 3A conference game.

Issaquah made just enough big plays on offense, stuffed Bellevue's vaunted running attack when it mattered most and stunned the top-ranked Wolverines 31-28 in a down-to-the-final-play slugfest.

The game ended and Issaquah players and coaches mobbed Bellevue's home field, swarming each other and screaming in disbelief. The Wolverines, meanwhile, wandered around in a daze. Some of them pounded the turf in frustration. Others wept openly.

"Obviously, when you slay a monster such as Bellevue, it's quite a great feeling," Issaquah coach Buddy Bland said. "I'm proud of our team."

Issaquah was the last team before Friday to beat Bellevue, in September 2003.

Bellevue (7-1, 5-1 KingCo 3A) would clinch the conference's No. 1 seed into the state playoffs by winning a home game over Newport on Friday at 7 p.m. Issaquah (5-4, 4-2) plays at Liberty the same night, with an outside chance of making the playoffs.

At Highline Stadium in Burien, Tremaine Parks rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries to lead the Eagles (7-2, 6-1) over the Highlanders (0-9, 0-7) in a Seamount League King Division game. Anthony Watkins and Mesake Leisani each scored two TDs for Highline. The Highlanders have lost 29 consecutive games, the longest skid in the state. Kent-Meridian had lost 32 in a row before beating Kentridge on Friday.

Chief Leschi 28, Seattle Lutheran 25

At Fife High School, Shannon Ward's interception in Warriors territory with six seconds left sealed Chief Leschi's win over Seattle Lutheran (3-5, 2-3) in a Sea-Tac B League game. Joseph Smith scored three TDs for Chief Leschi (4-5, 3-2). Mark Howell had two rushing TDs for Seattle Lutheran.
