Another long football losing streak is over.
A week after Garfield snapped a 19-game losing streak, Nathan Hale ended more than two years of frustration with a 19-18 Metro League win over Chief Sealth Thursday night.
The Raiders (1-8 overall, 1-4 Metro) ended a 24-game skid since Sept. 26, 2003, when they beat Blaine 23-13 in a nonleague game.
Jake Hoel's 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter put Hale ahead 19-6 before Sealth (0-9, 0-5) rallied with two TDs.
But after Rolando Pablo's 35-yard TD strike to Schuyler Taylor, the Seahawks' run for a two-point conversion was stuffed by the Raiders. Hale recovered an onside kick with 1:45 remaining and ran out the clock.
"They're just thrilled," first-year coach Hoover Hopkins said about his Raiders. "They've been playing very hard all season. ... We watched video for 11 days up to this game. We had an 11-day plan."
Senior lineman Jordan deVos made 11 tackles, intercepted a pass and had a sack for Nathan Hale. Junior running back Vance Wilson carried 19 times for 109 yards, and junior Joel Banks had 16 carries for 74 yards and scored from 3 and 8 yards.
"I hope the Chief Sealth kids and their coaches keep their heads up," Hopkins said of the Seahawks, who remained winless. "They were right in it up to the very last play."
