KENT — After a rough start last night, Kentwood High School's football team cruised to a 49-12 victory over Kentlake at French Field to give the Conquerors at least a share of the South Puget Sound League North Division crown.
The Falcons recovered a Conquerors fumble on the opening kickoff and capitalized with a Malachy Obot 4-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead.
But Kentwood (7-2 overall, 7-1 league) scored three consecutive TDs — on two runs by Andrew Stephenson and one from Derek Hartwigsen — to take control.
Kentlake (1-8, 1-7) answered with another Obot TD run — this time from 50 yards — to get the Falcons close, but Hartwigsen scored on a 6-yard burst to put Kentwood up 28-12 at halftime.
Hartwigsen, Sean Jones and Kevin Warner completed Kentwood's scoring in the second half.
Kentwood was tied with Auburn and Tahoma atop the North Division heading into last night. The Trojans and Bears can each finish tied with the Conquerors with a win tonight.
