Nick Shadle and sixth-ranked Puyallup's defense are proving to be quite a combination.
Shadle, a senior tailback, rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and the Vikings beat Federal Way 34-0 last night in a South Puget Sound League South Division game at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.
Puyallup's defense recorded its second shutout in the past three games and allowed the Eagles (3-2, 3-2) to gain just 144 yards a week after the Vikings beat then-No. 2-ranked Curtis 23-14.
The Vikings (5-0, 5-0) recovered three Federal Way fumbles and intercepted two passes.
Senior Tyler Rickerson scored two touchdowns for Puyallup, one on a 28-yard pass from senior quarterback Ryan Graves and the other on a 59-yard fumble return.
The 5-foot-8, 155-pound Shadle has scored 10 TDs this season and is averaging 172 rushing yards for Puyallup, which sits alone in first atop the South standings.
Other football games
Snohomish 35, at Kentlake 14
Senior fullback Steve Harrington rushed for 190 yards and three TDs to lead the Panthers (2-3) over the Falcons (1-4) in a nonleague game.
Senior running backs Nick Mundell and Matt Bonneywell also had scoring runs for Snohomish.
Kentlake senior quarterback Ryan Voelkel threw two TD passes, one to David Halseth and one to Colby Brydson.
Eastside Catholic 34, at Lakeside 6
Jason Butler caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Corey Nasman in the first quarter as the Crusaders jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back in a Metro League Mountain Division game.
In the second quarter, Nasman hit Tim Norman for an 88-yard score. Brian Taylor finished off the first-half scoring for Eastside Catholic (2-3, 1-0) with a 3-yard run.
Butler added another scoring pass from Nasman in the fourth quarter. Butler's three scores went for 3, 85, and 3 yards.
Alex Krengel scored on a 2-yard run for Lakeside (2-3, 0-1).
At Jefferson 34, Bethel 7
Cory Haywood had scoring runs of 9, 2, 11, and 19 yards to lead the Raiders (2-3, 2-3) over the Braves (1-4, 1-4) in an SPSL South game, Jefferson's first win over Bethel this century.
Chris Ratteray scored Jefferson's other TD, on a 2-yard run.
Bethel's only score came on Matt Pierce's 35-yard fumble return.
La Conner 21, at Orcas Island 15
Ryan Coonc scored on a 3-yard run and a 9-yard reception, and Marc Lewellyn had a 6-yard TD run to lead La Conner (3-2, 1-1) over the Vikings 3-2, 0-2) in a Northwest League 1A game.
Quilcene 28, at Seattle Lutheran 13
Bret Kenney and Kyle Morris each had two TD runs to lead Quilcene (2-1, 2-0) over Seattle Lutheran (1-3, 0-1) in a Sea-Tac B League game.
Girls soccer highlights
• Brittney Marshall scored two goals to lead Snohomish over Mount Vernon 2-0 in a WesCo North Division match. Mount Vernon fell to 1-7-1, 1-7-1. Goalkeeper Grace Lee and Madison Goverde combined for the shutout for the Panthers (7-1-1, 7-1-1).
• Lakeside got goals from Juliana Scott and Lauren Whatley to beat Bellarmine Prep 2-1 in a nonleague match. The Lions improved to 6-0-1.

• Ingraham named Holly Millard coach of its girls basketball team, according to athletic director Traci Huffer. Millard had been an assistant at Bishop Blanchet.
