WOODINVILLE — The first one came easy. Woodinville had to earn the rest.
After putting together a beautiful goal in the third minute, the Falcons girls soccer team overcame a defensive mistake that tied the game and kept applying pressure to a scrappy, quick Roosevelt squad to win 3-1 last night in a matchup of previously unbeaten KingCo 4A teams.
"We talked at halftime and we said we needed to play the ball and get it to each other's feet," said Woodinville junior forward Hannah Greig, who scored twice. "We executed that and we played a lot better."
The first goal came before the fans had barely unfolded their blankets and sat down on the chilly bleachers at Woodinville High.
Thump-thump-thump.
With clockwork precision, the Falcons (6-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 KingCo 4A) worked the ball down the field, strafing right to left with two one-touch passes from Jill Erickson to Kelsey Buswell to Erin McDevitt.
The third thump came from the left hash mark, as McDevitt crossed to Greig, charging down the middle. She slammed it in for the 1-0 lead.
Greig has seven goals to start the season.
Roosevelt (4-1-1, 2-1) tied it on a bad bounce off the Woodinville goalie in the 18th minute.
Roosevelt sophomore Maddy Rasch, the conference's co-leader with six goals coming into the game, popped a chip shot at Falcons keeper Dani Madden. She misplayed the catch and dropped the ball.
Roughriders junior forward Michelle Noelke pounced and knocked it in for the score, her third of the season.
Woodinville broke the game open midway through the second half. Heavy pressure in the 58th minute led to a scramble of players fighting for the ball in front of the Roosevelt net.

It squeaked out to McDevitt, who kicked it in for a 2-1 lead. Greig took advantage of a stunned Roosevelt team and scored her second goal about a minute later to put the game away.
