Prep roundup: Juanita names baseball coach

Seattle Times staff reporter

Skip Hulet, the junior-varsity coach at Eastlake the past seven years, has been named head baseball coach at Juanita High School in Kirkland. Hulet is also the diving coach for Redmond and Eastlake.

Hulet replaces Gary Groenen, who was fired in June after leading the Rebels to three state championships, seven state-semifinal appearances, six KingCo Conference titles and a 498-264 overall record in 33 years. Groenen is in the state baseball hall of fame.

Tuesday's volleyball highlights

• Garfield won a matchup of last year's first- and second-place KingCo 4A teams, beating defending champ Skyline 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 25-23. Skyline led 12-4 in the last game, but Garfield rallied and Jamie Nikami — who finished with eight aces, 14 digs and 30 assists — went 4 for 4 in serves to close out the match.

• Rogers (6-1, 4-0) stayed unbeaten in the SPSL South as Haleigh Adkins had 11 digs and 13 assists in a three-game sweep of Beamer.

• Emerald Ridge (6-2, 4-0 SPSL South) got 24 kills and 10 aces from Kylie Marshall in a three-game sweep of Graham-Kapowsin.

Whitney Appleby's 29 assists and Megan Amundson's 22 kills helped Stanwood outlast Meadowdale 28-26, 30-28, 21-25, 25-23. Katie Cowan piled up 41 assists and Caitlyn Rohrbach had 25 kills for Meadowdale.

Erin Ehrmantraut's 15 kills and 19 digs and Kristen Hinkle's 14 digs and 29 assists helped Bothell stay unbeaten in KingCo 4A with a 3-1 victory over Ballard.
