Prep notebook: Father sentenced to anger management

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula High School father who punched his daughter's basketball coach was sentenced yesterday to complete an anger-management class and to stay away from his children's athletic events for one year.

Rick Rae of Gig Harbor also was ordered by Judge Rick Porter of Clallam County District Court to pay fines and court costs totaling $1,950. Porter also ruled that Rae is to have no contact with former coach Jerrod Fleury or Fleury's wife.

The judge said failure to meet any condition of the sentence will result in a 10-day jail sentence.

A jury last week convicted Rae of fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor.

Rae punched Fleury after Peninsula High School was eliminated by Sequim in a Class 3A postseason game in February.

Fleury was accused of initiating contact when Rae approached him and lost his coaching job, but no criminal charges were filed against him.

Notes

Luke Hammond, a former Mountlake Terrace High School standout, will play college basketball for Evergreen State in Olympia, Terrace boys coach Nalin Sood announced. Two other former Terrace players will play community-college sports — Christiaan Hammond, basketball at Columbia Basin CC in Pasco; and Adrian Blake, football and basketball at Butte CC in Oroville, Calif. Christiaan and Luke Hammond are cousins.

Seattle Times staff reporter Craig Smith and correspondent Matt Massey contributed to this notebook.
