Rachael Painter
Decatur, P, Sr.
Decatur's only senior broke nearly every school pitching record in leading the Federal Way team to its first Class 4A state tournament. Her pinpoint location helped her compile a 21-5 record and 0.55 earned-run average this season. Opponents hit .130 against her, and the SPSL South MVP Pitcher struck out 279 in 177-2/3 innings this year. Painter is considering playing at Pacific Lutheran.
Lindsay Boughton
Woodinville, P, Jr.
Boughton dominated KingCo 4A Conference softball this season, finishing with a 16-0 record and a 0.20 ERA, helping the Falcons to a 23-0 record, earn KingCo and Sea-King District titles and a berth in the Class 4A state tournament. She pitched 11 shutouts, and in 104 innings, gave up just three earned runs. "There's a very comfortable feeling when she's on the mound," said her coach, Jim Weir.
Kellyn Grote
Issaquah, C, Sr.
Grote, a four-year varsity starter, hit .500 and stole 10 bases this season, leading the Eagles to a 15-7 overall record and to third place in the tough KingCo 3A Conference. Grote, a first-team KingCo 3A all-star, was the only catcher in the league to throw out Most Valuable Player Marnie Koziol on a stolen-base attempt. Grote, who has a 3.84 grade-point average and plans to attend Washington, also holds most of the school's girls weightlifting records.
Dani Weir
Woodinville , 1B, Jr.
Weir led KingCo 4A champion Woodinville with a .491 batting average, 27 runs batted in and five game-winning hits during the regular season. She also had a team-best five sacrifices. Playing first base, she committed only two errors all season for the undefeated Falcons, who won the Sea-King District tournament and qualified for state.
Bailey Stenson
Auburn, 2B, Jr.
The All-SPSL North first-team selection batted .453 with four doubles, six triples, six home runs and an .811 slugging percentage. Stenson also scored 26 runs and was 17 for 19 in steals attempts. Defensively, she committed only one error in 85 chances for the Trojans, who fell one game short of qualifying for state.
Melissa Dubay
Auburn Riverside, SS, Sr.
The four-year starter was named SPSL North MVP after batting an amazing .615 (32 for 52) with 10 doubles, two triples, 18 runs and 12 RBI. Dubay was also 11 for 11 in steals, had a .661 on-base percentage and .885 slugging percentage. Defensively, she committed only two errors in 16 league games. She signed to play for Boston University.
Rachael Sofie
Cascade, 3B, Sr.
The Marshall signee batted .583 with nine doubles, three triples, 16 runs and six stolen bases. She led the Bruins from Everett with a .667 on-base percentage. Coach Wendy Close called Sofie "by far, the best player I've coached." Sofie was voted first-team All-WesCo North as a junior and senior.
Dani Monson
Marysville-Pilchuck, OF, Sr.
The Kent State signee was one of the toughest outs in the WesCo North Division because of her speed. Monson had a .507 batting average, a .566 on-base percentage, 21 runs and nine stolen bases. She helped the Tomahawks to a runner-up finish in WesCo North and a 16-6 season record. Monson, who has a 3.9 grade-point average, was named first team All-WesCo North her last three years.
Amber Despain
Kentlake, OF, Sr.
Despain was perhaps the most improved player in the SPSL North this season, her first as a starter. She batted .409 as the Falcons' leadoff hitter and scored 12 runs in 16 league games, earning first-team all-star honors. The center fielder also has excellent defensive range and is described by coaches as the hardest worker on the Kentlake team. Despain hopes to cap her high-school career by helping the Falcons earn a state trophy.
Erin Fisher
Woodinville, OF, Jr.
The outfielder smacked seven home runs this season, including one of the hardest hit balls at Woodinville's home field. Fisher finished the regular season with a .932 slugging percentage and 21 RBI for the KingCo 4A Conference and Sea-King 4A District champions. She also stole eight bases for the unbeaten Falcons.
Marnie Koziol
Liberty, Utility, Sr.
The KingCo 3A MVP was the most disruptive offensive threat in the conference. The left-handed, slap-hitting shortstop hit .527 with 36 stolen bases and 27 runs to lead the Patriots from the Issaquah School District to a conference championship and to their ninth consecutive state-tournament appearance. A natural right-hander who moved from the outfield because of a team need, Koziol will play next year at Washington.
Sue Van Wyhe
Lake Stevens, Coach of the year
The first-year varsity coach guided the Vikings to WesCo North Division and Northwest 4A District titles and a berth at the Class 4A state tournament despite losing top pitcher Krista Crosson to a broken jaw in their sixth division game. The Vikings (18-2) lost only once after their senior ace was injured and are expected to get Crosson back for the state tournament this week.
