Baseball roundup: Newport wins pitching duel with Issaquah

ISSAQUAH — In a game in which both teams' No. 2 pitchers looked like aces, Newport junior Daniel Hagensen outdueled Issaquah junior Hunter Herrin to lead the ninth-ranked Knights to a 1-0 KingCo 3A baseball victory over the defending state champion Eagles yesterday.

Hagensen (3-1) allowed five hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one. Herrin went all seven, with four strikeouts and two walks.

"Hagy threw well. Both pitchers threw well," said Newport coach Brian Fischer. "It was a good high-school game with two pitchers throwing strikes and battling. There's definitely a rivalry with Issaquah, and you know both teams will come out and battle."

The Knights (7-3 overall, 3-1 KingCo) went ahead in the top of the fourth when junior catcher Ben Harty singled to right field, driving in Trent Henderson, who had doubled.

Justin Kakaley picked up the save with a rare four-strikeout seventh inning.
