Roundup: Enumclaw streak snapped

AUBURN — Auburn senior wrestler Chase Jackson thought he'd accomplished the goal of his high-school career last night when he won a match for the first time in four years of dual meets against South Puget Sound League rival Enumclaw.

Turns out, it was just a warmup act.

Auburn rolled up a big early lead and went on to a 32-24 victory that snapped Enumclaw's streak of 54 league dual-meet wins.

"We've got all our team goals listed on the (mat-room) wall," Jackson said after scoring a late takedown to preserve a 6-2 win over Justin Burt at 160 pounds. "The first one is, 'Beat Enumclaw.' "

Auburn became the first team to do so since Tahoma downed Enumclaw almost exactly seven years ago, on Jan. 22, 1998. The Hornets survived what was expected to be a tough battle against Tahoma one night earlier, but coach Lee Reichert of Enumclaw insisted fatigue was not a factor.

"We gave 'em what we had tonight," Reichert said. "And they were just better.

"When you have a long streak like that, it's a great ride for our parents and our team. It brings the community together. We lost, but it was a great match to watch."

Enumclaw fell to 6-1 in league dual meets, while Auburn improved to 5-1.

Fittingly, the Trojans scored the clinching points when 125-pound senior Tyler Bowles won 4-0 in the next-to-last match, sending a big, vocal crowd into a frenzy.

"The whole team won, it wasn't me," Bowles said afterward, shrugging. "But it feels good to win it my senior year and go out with a bang."

The victory was set up early in the meet, which started with the 135-pound match. Auburn led 4-3 after the first two matches, but then the Trojans got back-to-back, first-round pins from sophomore Shane Onufer (145) and junior Tyler Roshau (152) to push the lead to 16-3.

"That was definitely inspiring," Auburn senior captain Chase Jackson said. "And you've got to keep the momentum going in a match like this."

Jackson did that, defeating Justin Burt at 160 pounds to increase the Trojans' lead to 19-3. It was Jackson's first victory in four years of duals against the Hornets.

Just as Auburn threatened to run away, however, Enumclaw jumped back into the match in dramatic fashion. Junior Chad Burt, trailing 7-3 at 171 pounds, struck for a sudden pin of Auburn's Justin Healy with just two seconds remaining in the second period, turning what would have been a 22-3 deficit into a 19-9 Auburn edge.

Wins by James Eide at 215 and Kevin Shields at 275 and a forfeit for 103-pounder Chase Smith left Enumclaw trailing only 22-21 before Auburn pulled away with three straight wins.

"What a great Enumclaw team," Auburn coach Brian Peterson said. "Supposedly this was a down year for them and they were gonna have to scrape pieces together. It's one of the greatest wins in our program's history, dual-wise."

Notes

• Emerald Ridge (8-0) beat Federal Way 37-32 to clinch at least a tie for the SPSL South dual-meet championship. It's the first boys team title in any sport for the Puyallup school, which opened in 2000.

• Lake Stevens clinched its 16th consecutive WesCo North title and won its 96th consecutive league dual meet with a 52-10 win over Cascade. Lake Stevens' last league loss was in 1993 to Lynnwood.
