High School Sports By Terry Wood
BELLEVUE Interlake quarterback Bryce Brigham says video games aren't his specialty, but last night during a second-quarter whirlwind the Saints' offense put up points so fast it seemed this game was being staged on PlayStation 2. Against an overmatched Squalicum squad from Bellingham, Interlake put up 34 points in the first seven minutes of the second quarter en route to a 47-10 nonconference football runaway over the Storm. Brigham tossed three touchdown passes, two of them caught by Thomas Brooks-Fletcher, as the Saints (1-0) matched their entire 2003 season win total. "It was a good effort for us," Interlake coach Luke Huard said. "We're taking this season week by week. We're not looking any farther ahead than Wapato next week. "It's nice to get the first one under our belts," he conceded. "This team has high expectations." The 6-foot-3 Brigham, who passed for 1,995 yards and 25 touchdowns last year as a junior, completed 13 of 20 tosses for 189 yards last night. Four of his passes were dropped. "We should have scored earlier," Huard said.
When the Saints finally found the end zone, they looked like enrollees in a frequent-scorer program. Interlake scored on the second play of the second period when Brigham hit Brooks-Fletcher with a 15-yard scoring pass. A Squalicum fumble set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Brooks-Fletcher less than two minutes later, putting Interlake up 14-0. Brigham and Brooks-Fletcher connected on a 25-yard scoring pass with 7:42 to play, making it 20-0. Back-to-back interceptions by Michael Olson set up two more touchdowns, a 1-yard sneak by Brigham and a 25-yard touchdown pass from Brigham to Evan Robbins, leading to a 34-3 Interlake halftime lead. "It's like in basketball, when the hoop looks this big," Brigham said with his arms wide. "Tonight, the end zone looked huge." Squalicum (0-1) opened the second half with an eight-play, 76-yard scoring drive capped by a 20-yard touchdown run by James Lorden. But Interlake reclaimed the momentum when Billy Hancock returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown. "When we felt our backs up against the wall a little, we responded on defense," Huard said. "I liked seeing that." Hancock also scored on a 2-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter. Brooks-Fletcher finished with seven receptions for 102 yards and rushed seven times for 38 yards. Robbins caught seven passes for 111 yards.
