LAKE STEVENS Playing the role of a substitute host, Lake Stevens came away with a victory yesterday, edging East Valley of Spokane to win the Gators in Lake Stevens wrestling invitational. Second-ranked Lake Stevens won with 238.5 points while sixth-ranked East Valley of Spokane was close behind in second place with 236.5 points. The tournament was originally scheduled to be hosted by Decatur, hence the title, but a schedule conflict forced the move north. In addition to the second-ranked Vikings and sixth-ranked Knights from Spokane, two other team from the Class 4A top 10 state rankings were in Lake Stevens yesterday. No. 3 Spanaway Lake finished fourth, while eight-ranked Tahoma was fifth. Decatur's Kyle Bressler was named outstanding wrestler of the meet after winning the 189-pound title with a technical fall after winning two earlier matches by pin. Bressler, a senior and the defending state champion at 189 pounds, improved to 20-0 this season. Four wrestlers won their weight class for Lake Stevens. Kelly Kubec won the 103-pound title, Lester Brown won at 125, Tony Kubec took the 135 title and Clint Osborn won the 275 weight class. Edmonds Invitational
Woodinville crowned five individual champions and walked off with the team title at the Edmonds Invitational at Edmonds-Woodway High School. The Falcons scored 219.5 points while Mountlake Terrace finished second with 173.5 points. Woodinville's champions were Jordan Biggs at 103 pounds, Andrew Thompson at 135, Marc Grandia at 152, Tyler Lewis at 171 and Jack Andrews at 189. Tesir Alhussaini of Lynnwood, the 145-pound champion, was voted the Mike Hess Sportsmanship Award.
Liberty won five individual championships and also the team title at its own invitational tournament. The Patriots won with 215.5 points while R.A. Long High of Longview finished second with 194.5 points. Liberty's champions were Daniel Hanks at 112 pounds, B.J. Ward at 140, Justin Studer at 152, Scott Winslow at 189 and Zach Bartholomew at 275. Snohomish won its own invitational tournament, the Panther Classic, with 261.5 points and WesCo rival Cascade finished second with 187 points. The Panthers had three individual champions: Bryan Hise at 119 pounds, Casey Fortin at 171 and Ryan Burke at 215. Cascade also crowned three champs: Randall Walt at 103, Jonny Gilbertson at 112 and Brent Larson at 152. Gilbertson and Joe Huss of Kamiak (275 pounds) were named outstanding wrestlers of the tournament.
