Evergreen Wolverines

Location: White Center (Highline School District)

Coach: Paul Mauel (2nd year, 2-8 record)

2003: 2-5 (tied for 5th in King Division), 2-8 overall

Returning starters (3 offense, 7 defense): C/DT Manuel Mendoza, 6-2, 300, Sr.; OT Patrick Mendoza, 6-1, 285, Sr.; TE/OLB Josiah Fenene, 6-4, 240, Sr.; ILB/TE Andrew Burns, 6-3, 200, Sr.; LB/QB Jeremy Bakke, 6-0, 170, Sr.; OG/DL Mannix Tautolo, 5-10, 300, Jr.; DB/RB Josh Brown, 5-8, 160, Sr.; CB/HB Randal Henderson, 5-8, 165, So.

Other key returners: FB/DE Tobias Togi, 5-11, 235, So.; WR/SS Marvin Taufi, 6-2, 185, Jr.; OG/LB Sila Kapetaua, 6-1, 285, Sr.

Impact newcomers: WR/HB/S Phong Nguyen, 5-7, 170, So.; DB Johnny Jackson, 6-1, 180, Fr.; RB Daryl Armstead, 5-8, 190, Fr.; WR/DB Kenny Raymond, 6-1, 170, Fr.; OT Shane Hopkins, 5-10, 250, So.

Outlook: With plenty of size, speed and strength, Wolverines could have makings of playoff team, especially after full year in Mauel's system. But they are extremely young again with a half-dozen sophomores figuring prominently. Mendoza brothers anchor beefy line and will be a handful. Bakke, starting LB last year, should be sound at QB and there's a bevy of talented RBs. Cutting down turnovers will be a major key.

Hazen Highlanders

Location: Renton

Coach: Scott Leick (2nd year, 5-6)

2003: 5-2 (3rd), 5-6 overall (lost to Lakes 34-19 in Seamount playoffs)

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): TE/DE Trevor Gunderson, 6-3, 210, Sr.; C/DT Tyrell Clarke, 5-11, 235, Sr.; OT/NG Dustin Ward, 6-2, 300, Sr.; OT/DE Joey Lynch, 6-4, 250, Jr.; DB/WR Matt Marcoe, 5-8, 150, Sr.; LB/TB Matt Saegesser, 5-11, 210, Sr.; DL/OG Chris Ulrich, 5-11, 230, Sr.; DB/FB Mike Wood, 5-11, 160, Sr.

Other key returners: QB/FS John Liska, 6-0, 165, Jr.; TE/LB Danny Hagen, 6-0, 180, Sr.

Impact newcomers : WR/DB Brian Quintanilla, 5-10, 160, Sr.; OG/DL Jim Rouleau, 6-0, 230, Jr.; WR/DB Doug Johns, 6-0, 180, Sr.

Outlook: This could be second-best team in division behind Kennedy. Highlanders have good experience and size up front and should be effective on offense. Liska, backup QB last year, is a heady player who has made great strides and gives them ability to throw a bit more this season. If defense tightens up and doesn't allow big plays, Hazen should be in hunt again.

Highline Pirates

Location: Burien (Highline School District)

Coach: Keith Wright (2nd year, 0-9)

2003: 0-7 (8th), 0-9

Returning starters (2 offense, 4 defense): RB/SS Kelly McQuade, 6-1, 185, Sr.; OG/LB Corey Burcham, 6-0, 205, Sr.; FS/WR Greg Hammond, 6-0, 180, Sr.; CB/QB Anthony Watkins, 6-1, 175, So.; K/DE Kyle Rodebush, 5-10, 200, Jr.

Other key returners: OG/NG Kevin Hernandez, 6-0, 210, Jr.; C/DT Tyler Wekell, 6-0, 205, Jr.; RB/DB Jaime Harris, 5-10, 185, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Taufa Leisani, 6-0, 230, Sr.; TE/LB/DE Mesaki Leisani, 6-2, 215, Jr.; WR/CB Andy Paulsen, 6-1, 170, So.; RB/CB Brian Watkins, 5-7, 150, So.; QB/FS, 6-3, 180, Jr.; RB/DL Thomas Hall, 6-2, 240, Jr.

Outlook: Pirates should continue to make steady strides under Wright, but have just seven seniors and likely are a year away from moving very far up ladder. Several key players turned out late and will miss time early, so look for Highline to heat up as season progresses. Leisani brothers, who moved into the area after sitting out at Tyee last year, could make a big difference.

Kennedy Lancers

Location: Burien (private school)

Coach: Bob Bourgette (10th year, 84-13)

2003: 7-0 (1st), 12-2 overall (lost to O'Dea 31-3 in state semifinals)

Returning starters (7 offense, 8 defense): QB/DB Tyrese Lopez, 5-9, 175, Jr.; TB/CB Nate Williams, 6-2, 193, So; OG/DE Jake Eckman, 5-11, 220, Sr.; SE/LB Kyle Montgomery, 6-1, 190, Sr.; OT/DT Drew Hill, 6-3, 315, Sr.; OT/DT Jon Wind, 6-2, 245, Sr.; TE/LB Mike Yellam, 6-1, 215, Sr.; DT/OG Marcus Williams, 5-9, 230, Jr.; DE/OG Gates Bonynge, 5-11, 190, Sr.; LB/OG Sam Heredia, 5-11, 220, Jr.; LB/TE Ezra Swann, 6-0, 215, Sr.; K/P Emerson DeOliveira, 6-2, 175, Sr.

Other key returners: C/DE Reece Kolbrick, 6-2, 195, Sr.; RB/DB Keegan Robertson, 5-6, 160, Sr.; OG/DE Joel Castillo, 6-1, 190, Sr.; OG/DT Andy Delmor, 6-0, 210, Sr.; OG/DT J.T. McNeil, 6-0, 205, Sr.; RB/DB Austin Hendrix, 5-9, 170, Sr.; RB/DB Steve Gentry, 5-7, 160, Sr.; RB/LB Gareth Thomas, 6-0, 19, Sr.; C Kevin Freitag, 6-3, 255, So.; QB/DB Bobby Gentry, 5-9, 165, So.

Impact newcomers: WR/DB De Angelo Jones, 6-4, 180, So.; RB/DB Ace Thomas, 5-9, 170, Sr.; FB/LB Jeremy Bland, 5-9, 185, Jr.

Outlook: Expect another blockbuster year from JFK, which has lost only two league games over past nine years and won eight of past nine division (or league) championships. And Lancers are still young with underclassmen at nearly every skill position. Nate Williams is headliner on offense, but Lopez runs Wing-T to perfection and is run-pass threat with D'Angelo a prime target. Could go deep in playoffs again.

Lindbergh Eagles

Location: Renton

Coach: Ny'Ika Long (3rd year, 2-17)

2003: 2-5 (tied for 5th), 2-8

Returning starters (8 offense, 5 defense): WR/DB Brandon Zinn, 6-1, 170, Sr.; WR/LB Beau Whitefield, 6-1, 180, Jr.; TE/LB Monte Holt, 6-2, 215, Sr.; RB/DB John Desmarais, 6-1, 180, So.; OT/DT Justin Young, 6-2, 215, Sr.; QB/FS Brandon Whitman, 5-11, 175, Jr.; OG/LB Matt Smith, 5-11, 190, Jr.; RB/LB Lonnie Johnson, 5-9, 200, Jr.

Other key returner: OT/DT David Fawcett, 6-2, 260, Jr.

Impact newcomers: LB/DB Cloise Young, 5-11, 180, Jr.; OL/DT Jeff Colee, 5-11, 275, Sr.; WR/CB Tony Spino, 5-8, 165, Sr.

Outlook: Whitman and Zinn should be one of top passing combinations in league (Zinn led entire Seamount last year with 43 catches for 699 yards with 8 TDs). But Eagles, who run spread offense, need improved line play to improve in win-loss column. Return of Colee and Spino, who are back after sitting out last year, should be a plus. Keeping everyone healthy and eligible will be a key factor.

Mount Rainier Rams

Location: Des Moines (Highline School District)

Coach: Mike Merrill (3rd year, 9-11)

2003: 6-1 (2nd), 7-4 overall (lost to White River 62-0 in Seamount playoffs)

Returning starters (3 offense, 4 defense): RB/DB Mike Johnson, 5-9, 170, Jr.; C/DT Benny Colbern, 6-2, 290, Jr.; OT/DT Paul Morales, 5-8, 210, Sr.; DT/OG Aaron Shoultz, 5-10, 180, Jr.; DE/TE Mike Fesili, 6-0, 180, Jr.; LB/RB Dison Ittu, 5-10, 180, Sr.

Other key returner: RB/DB Carlos Eastland, 6-0, 180, Sr.

Impact newcomers: QB/TE/DE Matt Auvigne, 6-0, 200, Sr.; TE/DE Martin Sepulveda, 6-0, 220, Sr.; WR/DB Brad Rakkan, 6-0, 185, Sr.; OT/DL Kerry Bowser, 5-10, 250, Jr.; RB/DB Jonze Peters, 5-10, 170, Sr.; OT Dave Lopez, 6-2, 240, So.; QB/DB Xavier Ragland, 5-8, 170, Sr.; RB/DB Clarence Whiting, 5-8, 170, Sr.

Outlook: Despite last year's success, which came on heels of 2-7 season, Rams have had small opening turnout (30-35 players) and likely will take their licks early (especially against Lakes in Week 2). But they hope to pick up more players as school gets underway. A couple of key transfers (Ragland, Whiting), who started at Tyee last year, should make an impact after sitting out first five weeks. Auvigne is learning ropes at QB.

Renton Indians

Location: Renton

Coach: Terry Metcalf (3rd year, 8-10)

2003: 4-3 (4th), 6-3

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): RB/LB Patrick Smith, 5-10, 185, Sr.; OT/DT Karion Morris, 6-1, 260, Jr.; OT/DT L.J. Cruz, 6-1, 260, Jr.; WR/DB Dante' Calcote, 5-9, 150, Jr.; FB/DE John Current, 5-10, 210, Sr.; DT/OG Sam Porter, 5-11, 260, Sr.; DB/RB Antonio Thomas, 5-9, 170, Sr.

Other key returners: OL/DL Robert Lang, 6-1, 26-, Sr.; QB/LB Shane Stephens, 5-11, 175, Jr.

Impact newcomers: QB/LB Jouri Look, 6-1, 190, Sr.; QB/S Marcus Brooks, 5-8, 150, So.; QB/DB Darryl Reece, 6-1, 175, Sr.; WR/DB Fredrick Tucker, 5-9, 165, Sr.; C/DL Richie Kongikia, 6-0, 260, Sr.

Outlook: After just missing playoffs each of past two years, Indians hope to get over hump, but must minimize mistakes to do so. They have good size and speed, but lack depth and cannot afford injuries. Renton will miss multi-talented QB Quinton Jackson, who graduated, but have four solid candidates to choose from, all with different attributes. Small numbers early will hurt, but look for a midseason surge.

Tyee Totems

Location: SeaTac (Highline School District)

Coach: Pat O'Grady (6th year, 13-34)

2003: 2-5 (tied for 5th), 4-6

Returning starters (6 offense, 3 defense): TE/LB Andrew Fraley, 6-3, 230, Sr.; OG/LB Oliver Kilifi, 6-2, 260, Sr.; OG/LB Austine Moimoi, 5-11, 260, Jr.; QB/DB/PK/P David Moore, 5-11, 155, Sr.; OL/DT Cristian Umali, 6-0, 265, Jr.; OT/DT Live Hikila, 6-2, 310, Jr.

Other key returners: WR/DB Chris Gover, 5-5, 140, Sr.; TE/DE Adam Common, 6-3, 225, So.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Lucas Kapelli, 5-9, 160, Jr.; RB/OT/DE Michael Snider, 5-10, 165, So.; RB/DB DeShawn Smith, 5-10, 145, So.; RB/LB Tanner Ingram, 5-5, 140, So.; RB/OG/LB T.J. Thomas, 5-9, 165, Jr.

Outlook: When Totems have their top talent on field, they could well compete with everyone in division except probably Kennedy. But they traditionally have trouble keeping key guys eligible. Moore, who started at WR last year, should provide stability at QB, where he played previously. Smith and Ingram appear to be a quality tandem at RB and have a good-sized line to run behind.
