Ballard Beavers

Location: Ballard

Coach: Doug Trainor (5th year, 24-17)

2003: 6-2 conference (2nd place), 11-3 overall (lost to Pasco 21-14 in state-title game)

Returning starters (5 offense, 7 defense): OL/DL Adrien Diaz, 6-5, 313, Sr.; DL Ty Fotheringham, 6-3, 210, Sr.; DB Kevin Hickenbottom, 6-4, 205, Sr.; OL/DL Jim Magee, 6-3, 272, Sr.; RB/LB Jakob Shank, 6-2, 215, Sr.; OL Nick Thornton-Jack, 6-4, 308, Sr.; WR/DB Jerome Williams, 6-1, 208, Sr.; DB Riki Yoshinaga, 5-9, 180, Sr.

Other key returners: QB/DB Jordan Gardner, 6-1, 190, Sr.; LB Danny Hawkins, 6-2, 215, So.; LB Cameron Plommer, 6-0, 200, Sr.

Impact newcomers: OL Matt Gum, 6-2, 235, Sr.; RB Miles Schwab, 6-0, 180, So.; RB Geoffrey Spillers, 5-10, 175, Sr.; QB Cameron Wells, 6-5, 175, Jr.

Outlook: Beavers enter third season in KingCo 4A with another talented team featuring five, possibly six, players capable of playing college football. Linemen Diaz, Magee and Thornton-Jack lead an experienced group with college size. DBs and WRs also are strengths. Ballard led conference in total offense (354 yards per game) last year, but graduated four D-I players from that side of ball. New QB Gardner and a host of RBs, led by Schwab, will be counted on for immediate help.

BOTHELL COUGARS

Location: Bothell

Coach: Tom Bainter (5th year, 36-8)

2003: 8-0 (KingCo 4A champs), 11-1 (lost to Olympia 20-13 in state quarterfinals)

Returning starters (3 offense, 1 defense): OL Kellen Gallacher, 5-11, 220, Sr.; RB Nick Jones, 6-2, 205, Sr.; DB John Musseau, 6-0, 190, Sr.; OL Cory Nau, 6-2, 225, Sr.

Other key returners: TE/DL Aaron Keith, 6-3, 225, Sr.; RB/DB Carl Ridlon-Moore, 6-0, 200, Sr.; WR/DB Mike Pearce, 5-11, 165, Sr.; OL/LB Niko Wacker, 6-1, 205, Jr.; RB/DB Brett Wilcox, 5-9, 170, Sr.

Impact newcomers: QB/DB Cody Atkinson, 5-11, 170, So.; LB/TE Jason Domholt, 5-11, 170, Sr.; WR/DB Marcus Fermon, 6-1, 165, Sr.; DL/OL Chris Freeburg, 6-5, 245, Jr.; LB/RB Blake Heath, 6-1, 190, Sr.; OL/DL Nicky Jamison, 6-1, 215, Jr.; RB/DL Luke Jones, 5-11, 205, So.; OL/DL Lukas Kartic, 6-2, 210, Jr.; TE/DL John Lallas, 6-0, 170, Sr.; RB/DB Matt Marriott, 5-10, 165, Jr.; QB/DB Drew Muller, 5-10, 165, Sr.; WR/DB Matt Roberts, 5-8, 155, Jr.; RB/LB Jeff Skrinski, 6-0, 205, Sr.; OL/DL Ryan Walker, 5-11, 195, Sr.; WR/DB Josh Winters, 5-10, 165, Jr.

Outlook: Two-time defending KingCo 4A champions have won 16 consecutive conference games and are coaches' favorite to three-peat. Turnout of 118 players is biggest in Bainter's five seasons. But with only four returning starters, inexperience is a concern.

EASTLAKE WOLVES

Location: Sammamish

Coach: Jeff Chandler (6th year, 24-24)

2003: 3-5 (7th), 3-7

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): RB Bryce Andrews, 5-10, 175, Sr.; DB Shane Dalgleish, 6-2, 179, Sr.; LB James Gelfer, 6-1, 193, Sr.; DL Dominic Michaud, 6-1, 255, Sr.; WR Joe Orrico, 5-10, 165, Sr.; OL/DL Doug Rowe, 6-3, 212, Sr.; TE Steve Rowe, 6-3, 213, Sr.; DB Sean Supple, 5-11, 166, Sr.

Other key returners: DB Alec Anderson, 6-0, 171, Sr.; RB Corbin Collins, 5-8, 172, Sr.; OL/DL Geoff Fisher, 6-1, 218, Sr.; QB Kory Kemp, 5-11, 175, Sr.; OL/DL Jeff Olsen, 6-3, 198, Sr.; WR Tony Rosanova, 5-11, 172, Sr.; RB/OL Matt Spencer, 5-11, 208, Sr.; LB Austin Webb, 6-1, 194, Sr.

Impact newcomers: LB Ryan Manougian, 5-10, 189, Jr.; OL David Richardson, 6-1, 207, Jr.; WR Justin Seeley, 5-11, 154, Jr.

Outlook: Wolves coming off disappointing, injury-plagued year, but return a team Chandler says is unified and smart. RB Andrews (834 yards, 9 TDs) was top junior rusher in conference last season, and should combine with RB Collins to give Eastlake solid ground game. Lack of size on both sides of ball is concern. Good turnout of 103.

FRANKLIN QUAKERS

Location: Seattle

Coach: Joe Slye (21st year, 92-91)

2003: 0-8 (11th), 0-9

Returning starters (6 offense, 6 defense): LB/TE Brandon Bell, 5-9, 180, Sr.; LB/RB Damiko Cheatham, 5-7, 175, Sr.; LB/RB Andre Davis, 6-1, 225, So.; QB/DB Nick Glover, 5-8, 170, Jr.; WR/DB Kenny Smith, 5-9, 165, Sr.; LB/RB Fiso Tialavea, 5-9, 175, Sr.

Other key returners: OL/DL Joe Dator, 5-8, 245, So.; OL/DL Len Hunter, 5-8, 190, So.; WR/DB DeOnte Jackson-Durden, 5-9, 160, So.

Impact newcomers: OL/DL D'Andre Green, 6-0, 260, So.; LB/TE Zechariah Ulugalu, 6-1, 180, Jr.

Outlook: Quakers continue to struggle with limited resources and low numbers. Only 35 players in grades 9-12 turned out. Team speed should be strength. Lack of size and depth are concerns. LB/RB Cheatham could be one to watch. Franklin has lost 10 straight games dating to 2002.

GARFIELD BULLDOGS

Location: Seattle

Coach: Scott Laigo (3rd year, 4-15)

2003: 2-6 (10th), 2-8

Returning starters (8 offense, 7 defense): RB/DB Donte Davis, 6-0, 185, Sr.; WR/LB Endure Dinish, 6-2, 210, Sr.; WR/DB Dawante Greene, 6-0, 185, Sr.; OL J.C. Harris, 5-11, 245, Sr.; QB/LB Dominique Holman, 6-2, 210, Sr.; OL/DL Ryan Maye, 5-10, 210, Sr.; OL/DL Stephen Tuiasosopo, 6-0, 260, Sr.; OL/DL Jordan Wilson, 5-10, 310, Sr.

Other key returners: LB Aaron Bernstein, 5-11, 210, Sr.; LB/TE Chandler Burnning, 6-1, 180, Jr.; K Karel Cipra, 6-0, 185, Sr.; LB/RB Ryan Miller, 5-8, 185, Jr.; OL/DL Michael Mousseau, 6-4, 290, Jr.; DB George Solis, 5-7, 185, Sr.

Outlook: Bulldogs looking for breakout year after three consecutive two-win seasons. Team's strengths should be offensive line, averaging 263 pounds with four returning starters, and linebackers, led by college prospect Dinish. But Garfield must improve on defense (335 yards per game) and reduce penalties (85 yards per game) to make major leap in standings.

INGLEMOOR VIKINGS

Location: Kenmore

Coach: Frank Naish (26th year, 143-96)

2003: 5-3 (3rd), 6-4 (lost to Lincoln in district playoffs)

Returning starters (4 offense, 8 defense): OL J.R. Berard, 6-1, 240, Sr.; QB Steve Campbell, 6-3, 190, Sr.; DL Dan Dapper, 6-6, 255, Sr.; WR Danny Dion, 6-0, 170, Sr.; RB Tom Guinan, 5-9, 190, Sr.; DB Dan Howard, 6-1, 185, Sr.; DB Caleb Jessup, 5-10, 175, Jr.; DL Mike Sewell, 5-8, 175, Sr.; LB Jake Sheehan, 6-0, 200, Sr.; DL T.J. Stanford, 5-9, 210, Sr.; DB Stephen Wells, 5-10, 170, Jr.; DL Joel White-Frisbee, 6-4, 265, Jr.

Other key returners: TE/LB Sean Ashe, 6-1, 205, Sr.; OL/LB Eric Sergio, 5-11, 180, Sr.; WR/DB Joel Wickman, 5-9, 165, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Ryan Jess, 5-9, 180, Jr.; TE/DB Tyler Milne, 5-11, 185, Sr.; WR/DB Scott Nordquist, 5-10, 170, Sr.; WR/DB Jordan Swenson, 6-0, 175, Sr.

Outlook: Inglemoor returns most of its defense, as well as QB Campbell, who ranked fourth in conference in passing (1,187 yards, 16 TDs). Depth at RB a plus. Offensive line is biggest unknown. Vikings have made playoffs four of past five seasons.

JUANITA REBELS

Location: Kirkland

Coach: John Appelgate (1st year, 0-0)

2003: 3-5 (8th), 3-6

Returning starters (5 offense, 6 defense): LB Matt Grager, 6-3, 215, Sr.; QB Cort Koenig, 6-0, 170, Sr.; WR Michael Minerich, 5-11, 160, Sr.; DB Michael Rennaker, 6-2, 170, Sr.; DB Bryant Sharifi, 5-10, 160, Sr.; OL/DL Calvin Talley, 6-4, 280, Jr.; OL/DL Josh Tax, 6-2, 270, Sr.; WR/DB Bryan Walters, 6-0, 155, Jr.

Other key returners: WR/DB Nick Gibson, 6-1, 175, Sr.; RB/LB Doug Henson, 6-0, 170, Jr.; LB/RB Jon Radosevich, 6-2, 200, Jr.; OL Stephen Shocki, 6-0, 230, Jr.

Impact newcomer: RB/LB Jevon Montgomery, 6-2, 200, Jr.

Outlook: Appelgate, an assistant last year, was promoted this summer after former head coach Mike Pluschke took the top job at Redmond. Appelgate inherits a team looking for first winning season since 1999. Numbers are up, with about 60 players turning out. And QB Koenig (1,054 yards, 9 TDs), a three-year starter, returns, as does his favorite target, WR Walters (27 catches, 443 yards, 7 TDs). Young line is a concern.

LAKE WASHINGTON KANGAROOS

Location: Kirkland

Coach: Tim Tramp (7th year, 32-27)

2003: 5-3 (4th), 7-5 (lost to Evergreen of Vancouver 45-20 in state quarterfinals)

Returning starters (9 offense, 9 defense): DB Josh Ashenbrenner, 5-11, 180, Jr.; OL Jordan Barsness, 6-0, 215, Sr.; WR Dana Bjurstrom, 6-3, 195, Sr.; DB Peter Cangany, 5-8, 160, Sr.; TE Brandon Couch, 5-8, 168, Sr.; K/P Paul Dickey, 6-1, 164, Sr.; DL Justin Fisher, 5-6, 216, Sr.; DL Austin France, 5-11, 160, Sr.; OL Scott Friberg, 6-3, 272, Sr.; RB Frank Fu, 5-11, 175, Sr.; OL Trevor Larson, 5-7, 171, Sr.; LB Christian Noriega, 5-8, 190, Sr.; DL Mason Siddick, 6-0, 214, Sr.; LB Nick Skinner, 5-10, 182, Sr.; QB Ryan Staudacher, 6-3, 190, Sr.; OL/DL Anthony Toledo, 5-10, 270, Sr.

Other key returners: RB Michael Coleman, 6-1, 185, Sr.; WR Kevin DeBell, 6-0, 150, Sr.; OL Chris Ecret, 5-11, 241, Sr.; WR/DB Kyle Speed, 5-10, 146, Sr.; WR/DB Chris Teteak, 6-2, 173; RB/DB Ben Thielsen, 5-8, 145, Jr.; DB Ross Zboralski, 5-10, 160, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Jared Anderson, 5-10, 175, Sr.; TE Chris Izbicki, 6-4, 225, So.

Outlook: Kangaroos coming off best season since state playoffs started in 1973 and return virtually everyone, including QB Staudacher (2,960 yards, 19 TDs), a three-year starter. LW led conference in passing (249 yards per game), and should be bolstered by beefed-up ground game. Depth is a concern.

REDMOND MUSTANGS

Location: Redmond

Coach: Mike Pluschke (1st year)

2003: 5-3 (6th), 6-3 (lost to Woodinville in KingCo 4A mini-playoff)

Returning starters (4 offense, 2 defense): DL Omar Abdelrassoul, 6-4, 230, Sr.; WR/DB Tyler Fast, 6-0, 185, Sr.; RB/DL Kevin Othieno, 6-2, 240, Jr.; RB/LB Zach Schlosser, 5-10, 185, Sr.; WR/DB Tim Windus, 6-1, 185, Sr.; QB/DB Jozmar Willis, 6-2, 195, Sr.

Other key returners: OL/DL Jacob Goodwin, 6-6, 365, Sr.; LB Brett Hewett, 6-1, 215, Sr.; TE Keenan Lazzar, 6-4, 225, Sr.; RB/LB Max Shoenrock, 6-1, 205, Sr.; OL/DL Sasha Zabihi, 6-2, 240, Sr.

Impact newcomers: OL/DL Devin Cole, 6-4, 250, So.; LB Austin Benham, 5-11, 165, Jr.; RB/LB Lagwone Mitz, 6-2, 205, So.; DB/WR Jabari Mu'ied, 5-11, 150, So.; OL/DL Travis Pierce, 6-2, 270, Jr.

Outlook: Pluschke, a 1990 Redmond grad, returns after three years as head coach at Juanita. Mustangs ranked second in conference in total defense (234 yards per game) last year but return only two starters on that side of ball. Ground game should be strength with trio of Othieno, Schlosser and Willis, who starts for first time at QB. Good team speed. Mustangs have nine straight winning seasons. About 90 players turned out.

ROOSEVELT ROUGHRIDERS

Location: Seattle

Coach: Jeff Ware (2nd year, 2-7)

2003: 2-6 (9th), 2-7

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): OL Jason Boyd, 5-9, 190, Sr.; LB Rex Harrison, 5-11, 195, Sr.; DB Jake Hongladarom, 5-11, 175, Jr.; OL/DL Corey Hume, 6-2, 240, Sr.; RB/DL Merrill Jeffery, 6-0, 195, Sr.; OL Evan Ruff, 6-2, 235, Jr.; DB Andrew Tuttle, 6-1, 180, Jr.

Other key returners: WR Jack Bigelow, 5-11, 175, Jr.; TE Todd Christensen, 6-0, 200, Jr.; OL George Eyre, 6-1, 250, Sr.; RB Jared Grose, 5-9, 160, Jr.; DB John Hagen, 5-9, 165, Jr.; DB Patrick Jordan, 5-8, 155, Sr.; RB/DB Miles Kenney, 5-10, 175, Jr.; TE/DL Konstantin Konstantinov, 6-0, 205, Sr.; LB David Muskheli, 5-10, 190, Sr.; WR Michael Odland, 6-3, 195, Jr.

Impact newcomers: DB Joey Gilmore, 5-9, 150, Jr.; K Simon Madsen, 5-10, 160, Jr.; QB Chris Richey, 6-1, 180, Jr.; DB Steven Vinueza, 5-11, 180, Sr.

Outlook: Roughriders enter first year of two-year upheaval as renovations begin on school. Practices have been moved to fields at Wilson Pacific. Small, committed group of seniors and talented crop of RBs, led by Jeffery (356 yards), should be strengths. Line remains biggest question. Though depth is a concern with only 30 out, help is on horizon with promising freshman class of about 30.

SKYLINE SPARTANS

Location: Issaquah

Coach: Steve Gervais (7th year, 48-16)

2003: 6-3 (4th in KingCo 3A), 7-3

Returning starters (6 offense, 7 defense): DB Nick Cragin, 5-11, 180, Sr.; OL Alex Francis, 6-1, 260, Sr.; QB Aaron Hasson, 5-10, 180, Sr.; OL/DL Danny Johnson, 6-4, 270, Sr.; RB/DB Brett Kaluza, 6-1, 185, Sr.; DL Blake Kenyon, 5-10, 255, Jr.; OL Ryan King, 6-1, 255, Sr.; RB/LB Tyler Pelluer, 6-1, 210, Sr.; DL Jake Randolph, 6-2, 235, Sr.; LB Johnny Siregar, 5-9, 175, Sr.

Other key returners: WR/DB Tony Chidiac, 5-10, 165, Jr.; OL Myles Gilkey, 6-0, 240, Sr.; OL Cody Habben, 6-4, 255, Jr.; WR/DB Andy Robinson, 5-10, 160, Sr.

Impact newcomer: WR/DB Ryan Edwards, 5-11, 180, So.

Outlook: Spartans step up in class after spending first seven seasons in Class 3A, but do so with veteran team. RBs Kaluza and Pelluer combined for 1,219 yards and 15 TDs last season, and will run behind line that returns three starters. QB Hasson a threat to run or throw. Johnson a potential D-I college player. Skyline has made playoffs three of past four seasons.

WOODINVILLE FALCONS

Location: Woodinville

Coach: Wayne Maxwell (1st year)

2003: 5-3 (5th), 5-4 (lost to Lake Washington in KingCo 4A mini-playoff)

Returning starters (6 offense, 3 defense): WR Bryant Bullock, 5-11, 165, Sr.; LB Jason Carpenter, 5-11, 210, Sr.; OL Jason Engelbrecht, 6-2, 235, Sr.; LB Casey Hancock, 6-1, 182, Jr.; OL Jared Haines, 6-4, 230, Sr.; DB Cory Nicol, 5-10, 165, Sr.; RB Brett Renville, 5-9, 156, Sr.; WR Joey Stivala, 5-10, 162, Sr.; OL/DL Matt Tomco, 5-10, 230, Sr.

Other key returners: DB Jake Blackstone, 5-10, 150, Sr.; OL Rob Erickson, 5-11, 195, Sr.; QB Andrew Luce, 6-0, 177, Sr.; WR Anthony Luce, 6-0, 174, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/DL Derek Acorn, 6-1, 195, Sr.; LB Blake Cordon, 5-11, 195, Jr.; OL/DL Luke Hippely, 6-1, 195, Jr.; OL/DL Aaron Lavarias, 6-2, 205, Jr.; WR Drew Maloney, 6-3, 180, Jr.; TE/LB Zane Murfitt, 6-0, 165, Sr.; RB Daniel Ninomiya, 6-0, 160, Jr.; WR/DB Michael Peck, 6-2, 168, Sr.; OL Rick Phillips, 6-0, 183, Jr.; RB/DB Sam Pugmire, 5-10, 164, Jr.

Outlook: Maxwell, team's former defensive coordinator, replaces Mark Leander, who resigned after two seasons. Offensive line is strength. Andrew Luce slight favorite to take over QB job vacated by Matt Tuiasosopo, now playing baseball in Mariners organization. Falcons led conference in rushing offense (264 yards per game) last year, but must find replacement for 1,000-yard rusher Shawn Gizynski. About 60 players turned out.
