Seattle schools' open enrollment set

Open enrollment in Seattle Public Schools for the 2008-09 school year is scheduled from Jan. 22-Feb. 29. During this period, families may register and apply for school for children entering kindergarten in September 2008; for students advancing from elementary to middle school or from middle to high school; for any other students who wish to change schools; or for students who will be new to the district in September.
Students who apply during open enrollment will receive priority assignment for September 2008. Information needed to apply is available at enrollment-service centers or online at www.seattleschools.org/area/eso/story.dxml.
To assist in enrollment, an All-City Kindergarten and Middle School Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 12 at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence, 2445 Third Ave. S., Seattle, and the South and Southeast All Grades School Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 2 at Mercer Middle School, 1600 Columbian Way S., Seattle.
The three enrollment centers are Wilson-Pacific, Building 400, 1330 N. 90th St.; the Bilingual Family Center, Aki Kurose Middle School, Room 105, 3928 S. Graham St.; and the John Stanford Center.

Burke-Gilman Trail closed
Friday: Weather permitting, the Burke-Gilman Trail will close between Northeast 65th and Northeast 70th streets for repair work on a stretch of about 60 feet south of Northeast 70th. Signs will direct trail users to take 58th Avenue Northeast for five blocks between Northeast 65th and Northeast 70th streets.
Sounds of the season
Friday: The Bellevue Philharmonic presents a free concert of classical music, 8 p.m., Center House, at Seattle Center.
Zoo winter admission
Jan. 1: The winter admission fee at Woodland Park Zoo will increase by 50 cents to help offset increasing costs. The new fees through April 30 are adults (13-64) $11; children (3-12) $8; and toddlers (up to 2) free. Seniors and people with disabilities receive a discount. Parking will also increase by 50 cents to $4.50. Summer admission fees from May 1-Sept. 30 remain the same, $15 for adults and $10 for children, 3-12.

Dec. 20, 1966: The National Basketball Association awarded Seattle a franchise, christened the SuperSonics. The team began playing for the 1967-68 NBA season at the Seattle Center Coliseum.
Team owner Sam Schulman and manager Don Richman selected Tom Meschery, Walt Hazzard and 13 others in the expansion draft, as well as Al Tucker, the team's first pick in the college draft. Al Bianchi was named head coach. The SuperSonics played their first game against fellow expansion team the San Diego Rockets in a preseason matchup on Sept. 19, 1967, in San Diego.
