Hurricane relief effort

The Katrina Bikes Partnership Project has set aside this weekend to collect new and used bicycles to be distributed to people affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The project is a collaboration of Louisiana public agencies, Seattle cycling groups, community groups and Seattle public schools. All services, including shipment of the bikes to Gulf Coast areas, are being donated. Bikes also will be provided to evacuees relocated in the Northwest.

Used bikes in good condition and helmets, pumps, locks, backpacks, new water bottles, patch kits, tire levers, red flashing lights and other bicycling-related gear can be donated from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Seattle's Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way N.E., in Hangar 30, which is near the park entrance.

Volunteers also will be accepting donations at the same place Nov. 5 and 6. Information: 206-523-7694.

Can you help?

Seattle Public Utilities is looking for volunteers to help plant native plants along Thornton Creek as part of ongoing habitat restoration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. Volunteers should meet at the Northeast 104th Street street-end just off Fifth Avenue Northeast, near the Pacific Medical Building footbridge. Tools and gloves will be provided.

The city considers Thornton Creek, which runs through the heart of North Seattle from Lake Washington to Puget Sound, valuable habitat for urban wildlife and birds. SPU, EarthCorps and the Seattle Parks Department are heading up restoration efforts.

Volunteers can park in the large lot at the corner of Fifth Avenue Northeast and Northeast 103rd Street, then take the crosswalk across Fifth Avenue and walk the sidewalk north to mid-block, then follow the signs. Reservations are requested: 206-684-4163.
