Fit & fun |

The folks at Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club would like to introduce you to "Jack" and "Kitty" and all the other unique terms — as well as nuances — of their sport.

For the next three Friday nights, the club is hosting "BBQ & Bowls." The curious will receive instruction atop the manicured lawn fields that overlook Seattle's skyline and learn the art and science of the sport some liken to "curling on grass."

Lessons are free, but a $5 per person greens fee donation would be appreciated. Dress casually, wear flat-soled shoes and bring food or something to grill whether or not you want to bowl.

The events — at 4103 Beacon Ave. S. — run from 6 p.m. to dusk.

The nights also can serve as a primer for those who want to watch the United States National Championships, which the club hosts Aug. 23-28. Forty-eight of the nation's best bowlers will compete.
