U.N. tracking monkeypox cases in Africa

The potentially lethal monkeypox virus is spreading in the Republic of Congo, the United Nations said.

More than 60 people have been diagnosed with the rare disease in the northern region of Likouala, the U.N.'s Integrated Regional Information Network said on its Web site Wednesday.

Monkeypox is spread by contact with infected animals, especially monkeys, which are often consumed in the West African nation. Symptoms include fever, fatigue and fluid-filled skin lesions.

Most cases are in refugees younger than 15 from neighboring Congo.
