Charley Hoffman wins Deutsche Bank Championship by 5 shots | Golf

Charley Hoffman won the Deutsche Bank Championship and Tiger Woods maintained his status as the top-ranked golfer in the world.

NORTON, Mass. — Charley Hoffman couldn't count all the perks that came with winning the Deutsche Bank Championship, just as he lost track of the 11 birdies he made in a Labor Day masterpiece.

He moved up 57 spots to No. 2 behind Matt Kuchar in the FedEx Cup standings, giving Hoffman a shot at the $10 million bonus.

Hoffman gets to play all four majors in 2011, after not getting into any of them this year. That includes a trip down Magnolia Lane at Augusta National in Georgia to compete in his first Masters.

And that might not be all.

"The best perk, hopefully, will be a Ryder Cup berth," Hoffman said after closing with a 9-under-par 62, the best finish by a winner at TPC Boston since the tournament began in 2003. "Obviously, I wasn't in contention, but I hope I am now. It would be an honor to play, and I think I can play well."

Tiger Woods shot a 69 and kept his No. 1 world ranking for the 274th week in a row, with an assist from Phil Mickelson, who imploded on the back nine with a triple bogey and double bogey to shoot a 76.

Many observers expect Woods, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink to be announced as Ryder Cup picks Tuesday by U.S. captain Corey Pavin. No one seems to stand out for the fourth captain's pick to the 12-man team that will play against Europe in Wales starting Oct. 1.

Hoffman, who earned $1.35 million, had a 22-under 262 total for 72 holes. The 33-year-old has two PGA Tour victories.

Third-round leader Jason Day (71), Geoff Ogilvy (66) and Luke Donald (69) tied for second at 17 under.

The top 70 players in FedEx Cup points advance to the third event in the four-event playoffs — the BMW Championship, which starts Thursday in Lemont, Ill.

Ryan Moore (76) of Puyallup tied for 67th place at the Deutsche Bank and is 58th in FedEx Cup points. Alex Prugh, a former Washington Huskies player from Spokane, missed the cut and won't advance because he is 97th in FedEx Cup points.
