Derek Lamely wins PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open | Golf
Derek Lamely won the rain-delayed Puerto Rico Open, a PGA Tour event.
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Derek Lamely had to contend with a rain-delayed start, slow play on a soggy course, and tamping down his inevitable nerves as he inched closer to notching his first victory as a rookie on the PGA Tour.
But the 29-year-old American emerged from the pack with easygoing style, shooting a 6-under-par 66 to win the Puerto Rico Open by two strokes.
He finished at 19-under-par 269, setting a tournament record at Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico, and earning $630,000. Fellow American Kris Blanks shot a 69 and was second.
Kirk Triplett (73), a Pullman High School graduate, tied for 17th place at 11 under. Jeff Gove (74) of Seattle tied for 54th at 5 under.
Lamely said, "I'm still a rookie out here, even though I just won."
Note
• The Masters, which starts April 8, will be broadcast in 3-D — although few Americans own the technology to take advantage. Augusta National officials announced the Masters can be viewed on 3-D-capable TV sets and computers.
