Golf | Michelle Wie, 20, earns her first LPGA Tour title

Immediately after tapping in Sunday to win her first LPGA Tour event, the 20-year-old Wie pulled the ball from the 18th hole, looked up, let out a big sigh of relief, bounced up and down and pumped her fist.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — American Michelle Wie raised both arms in the air and put a hand over her mouth.

No need to say a thing — this celebration was many years in the making.

Immediately after tapping in Sunday to win her first LPGA Tour event, the 20-year-old Wie pulled the ball from the 18th hole, looked up, let out a big sigh of relief, bounced up and down and pumped her fist.

"I think that hopefully life will be a lot better, but I still have a lot of work to do," she said after prevailing in her 65th LPGA Tour start.

Wie closed with a 3-under 69 for a 13-under 275 total and a two-stroke victory over Solheim Cup teammate Paula Creamer in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Wie earned $220,000 and enjoyed a beer shower on the 18th green from Creamer (70) and Morgan Pressel (67). Pressel tied for third.

"I've always seen it on TV and I've always wanted people to pour beer on me," said Wie, who has six second-place finishes on Tour.

Wie played in an LPGA event when she was 12, competed in PGA Tour events when she was 14 and turned pro in 2005.

Other tournament

• Canadian Stephen Ames closed with an 8-under 64 and prevailed in a playoff in the final PGA Tour event of the season — the Children's Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Ames, who also won the tournament in 2007, parred the two playoff holes.

George McNeill (67) and Justin Leonard (67) joined Ames at 18-under 270 after 72 holes. Leonard was eliminated with a bogey on the first playoff hole and McNeill missed a par putt from about 6 feet on the second playoff hole. Ames, 45, earned $846,000 for his fourth career Tour victory.

The top 125 on the money list are guaranteed full status for the 2010 Tour. Jimmy Walker and Nicholas Thompson moved inside the top 125; at the start of the tournament, Thompson was 132nd on the money list and Walker was 130th.
