Golf | John Cook wins tournament, Loren Roberts earns season points title

SONOMA, Calif. — John Cook won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship tournament by five strokes Sunday for his second title in three weeks on the 50-and-older Champions Tour, and Loren Roberts took the season points title.

Cook, 52, the Administaff Small Business Classic winner two weeks earlier in Texas, closed with a 3-under-par 69 to finish at 22-under 266 at Sonoma Golf Club. He surpassed the tournament record of 268 shared by Jim Thorpe and Andy Bean and earned $442,000.

Meanwhile, Roberts had a 66 to tie for sixth place at 13 under — and secured the points title and $1 million annuity that goes with it for the second time in three years. Roberts had 2,670 Schwab Cup points and Cook placed second with 2,351.

Roberts, 54, didn't play well the first two rounds in Sonoma, but corrected a flaw while on the driving range late Friday night and shot 66s in the last two rounds.

"I played two totally different golf tournaments in one week," he said.

Roberts' victories included the Boeing Classic at the TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge in August.

Russ Cochran (68) was the runner-up to Cook.

Joey Sindelar, Cook's college roommate at Ohio State, remained hospitalized after having a pulmonary embolism while playing the third round. Tour officials said the 51-year-old Sindelar's condition had improved.

Fisher beats Kim

CASARES, Spain — Ross Fisher of England beat American Anthony Kim 4 and 3 to win the 36-hole World Match Play Championship final.

"Fortunately the putter finally got a little bit hot," said Fisher, who earned $1.1 million for the victory.

Kim made $666,000.

Other tournaments

• Ian Poulter of England shot a 1-over 72 to win the Singapore Open by one stroke over Liang Wen-chong (70) of China. Poulter finished at 10-under 274 on the Sentosa Golf Club's Serapong Course and earned $833,330.

• Na Yeon Choi of South Korea birdied the final hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-stroke victory over Maria Hjorth (67) of Sweden and Yani Tseng (68) of Taiwan in the LPGA Tour Hana Bank-Kolon Championship in Incheon, South Korea. Choi finished at 10-under 206 and earned $255,000.

Jimin Kang (78), a graduate of King's High School in Shoreline, tied for 25th place at 2 over. She was tied for third place after two rounds.
