EDINA, Minn. — Former Washington Huskies player Louise Friberg shot a 4-under-par 69 Thursday at Interlachen and was two shots off the lead at the U.S. Women's Open.
Friberg, who won this year in Mexico but has missed six cuts, is tied with Maria Jose Uribe and Ji-Yai Shin. Veteran Pat Hurst and Ji Young Oh are the leaders at 6-under 67, and Song-Hee Kim is another shot back.
Annika Sorenstam, playing her final U.S. Open before one of the largest galleries on a sunshine-filled afternoon, didn't give them much to cheer. The three-time Open champion, retiring at the end of the year, made four bogeys in a six-hole stretch and staggered to a 75, her highest opening round at this major since she played in 1992 as an amateur. She wasn't alone in her struggles.
Lorena Ochoa, the No. 1 player in women's golf who has won two of the last three majors, didn't make a birdie until the 14th hole in the morning, when the conditions were soft. She rallied with three birdies on her last five holes for a 73.
Michelle Wie, hoping to build on recent momentum, butchered the ninth hole on her way to a quintuple-bogey 9 and shot 81.
"There's a lot of golf left," said Hurst, a winner of five tournaments, including the 1998 Nabisco Dinah Shore. Hot putting turned her round around, and she was 7 under her last 13 holes. "So I'm just going to go out and play the best that I can, and like today, just take it hole by hole and not think about the outcome."
Jimin Kang, a graduate of King's High in Shoreline, shot an even-par 73.
Three tied for Buick lead
GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Corey Pavin, Bo Van Pelt and Dudley Hart shot 8-under 64s to share the first-round lead in the Buick Open.
Briny Baird and Daniel Chopra were a stroke back, and Woody Austin, Shigeki Maruyama, Kenneth Ferrie and Jon Mills shot 66s on the Warwick Hills course. Jim Furyk was among a big group four shots behind the leaders.
Jeff Gove of Seattle shot a 1-under 71.
Note
• Pablo Larrazabal of Spain shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the French Open in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
