DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — American Tiger Woods struggled Saturday and Ernie Els of South Africa took advantage, surging into the lead of the Dubai Desert Classic with a 7-under-par 65.
That doesn't mean Els thinks he can sit on his one-shot lead over defending champion Henrik Stenson (68) of Sweden.
Els, the 1994, 2002 and 2005 Dubai winner, had an eagle and five birdies to reach 11-under 205.
Lee Westwood (68) of England and Graeme McDowell (69) of Northern Ireland were at 8 under.
"Probably need a really low one [score] tomorrow," Els said. "I can't see Henrik with Tiger and the other guys not shooting low, so just got to keep going tomorrow."
Woods, who led after the first two rounds, missed putts, hit wayward drives and shouted at a photographer en route to a 73. He is at 7 under and in a six-way tie for fifth place.
"I didn't play well today," said Woods, who opened his season with an eight-stroke victory at the Buick Invitational last week in San Diego. "I didn't hit the ball close enough on the greens, and consequently I was lag putting a lot. Never really gave myself a lot of looks at birdies."
Record 170,802 watch FBR Open in Arizona
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — J.B. Holmes shot a 5-under 66 in the FBR Open to build a two-shot lead in front of a record 170,802 fans.
Holmes, who won the FBR as a rookie in 2006 but is winless since on the PGA Tour, takes a 14-under 199 total into today's final round on the desert layout at TPC Scottsdale.
Charles Warren, co-leader after the first round, shot a 67, bogeying the final hole, to match Jonathan Byrd (68) at 12 under.
Ben Crane (67) and Nick O'Hern (68) were at 11 under, and two-time champion Phil Mickelson (67) was in a group of six at 10 under.

The turnout surpassed the one-session record of 168,337 set in 2006.
Fred Couples of Seattle and Ryan Moore of Puyallup missed the cut.
Other tournament
• Defending champion Karrie Webb had an even-par 73 in slippery and windy conditions and is one stroke off the lead going into the final round of the Women's Australian Open in Melbourne.
Webb trails fellow Australian Lindsey Wright, who had a 72 to lead the tournament at 3 under, and is tied with South Korea's Shin Ji-yai at 2-under 217 overall.
Webb, seeking a fourth national title, said, "There's players up there who haven't won the Australian Open and I have. I do have experience at winning golf tournaments."
