Local golf notes: Ticket prices set for TPC

Seattle Times staff reporter

Single-day tickets will cost $20 and all-tournament tickets will cost $40 for the Greater Seattle Champions Classic, Aug. 19-21 at the TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge.

Tournament director Chuck Nelson made the announcement yesterday. Tickets for the Champions Tour (formerly PGA Senior Tour) event are expected to go on sale within weeks.

An all-week pass, which will include the Wells Fargo Pro-Am and the free NFL "Rumble at the Ridge," will be $60.

Nelson said 1982 Masters champion Craig Stadler has committed to play here and that 1979 Masters champion Fuzzy Zoeller has unofficially committed.

NFL Hall of Fame members who have agreed to play in the Aug. 15 "Rumble at the Ridge" include Steve Largent, Lynn Swann, Mike McCormack, Hugh McElhenny, Gene Upshaw, Jack Youngblood, Jan Stenerud, Larry Wilson and Mike Haynes.

In a conference call with Seattle-area reporters yesterday, Swann said he is exploring the possibility of running for governor of Pennsylvania in 2006.

Seahawks Ring of Honor honorees who are committed to play in the "Rumble" are Jacob Green and Curt Warner.

The tournament is seeking volunteers. More information is available at www.greaterseattlechampionsclassic.com.

Port Ludlow Club plans improvements

The public Port Ludlow Golf Club is planning $5 million in improvements, including a new $3.2 million clubhouse.

Course improvements at the 27-hole complex will include bunker restoration, irrigation upgrades and tree trimming.

Golfweek Magazine recently ranked Port Ludlow (Tide-Timber nines) as the No. 4 public-access course in the state behind The Olympic Course at Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Semiahmoo in Blaine, and Trophy Lake Golf and Casting in Port Orchard. The No. 5 course was Washington National near Auburn.

The new director of golf at Port Ludlow is Kevin Earl, formerly head pro at Jackson Park in Seattle.

New golf and fishing club in Chelan

Groundbreaking is expected in May for the Daybreak Golf and Fishing Club, a private club in Chelan.

Perry Dye of Dye Design of Denver is the architect for the course that will be part of a 1,300-acre development that will include 810 home sites.

Russ McClellan, director of sales, said the course is likely to open in the spring of 2007. He expects 90 percent of the homebuyers and club members to come from the Puget Sound area.

The development will include a catch-and-release fly-fishing lake and a kids' fishing lake. Guides will be available for nearby lakes. The development eventually will include a par-3 course, McClellan said.

Casper's role

Billy Casper, who made headlines last week for shooting 106 in the first round of the Masters, has a role in Washington golf.

Casper's golf management company, Billy Casper Golf, operates four courses in the state: Sumner Meadows in Sumner, Tri-Mountain in Ridgefield near Vancouver, and Legion Memorial and Walter Hall in Everett.

A major bunker restoration program has been completed at Sumner Meadows. All of the courses have begun "Rewards Card" programs that enable frequent customers to earn free rounds and discounts on food and merchandise.
