Q: I like turkey burgers, but often they turn out too bland. How can I spice them up?

A: The trick to delicious turkey burgers is keeping them tender and juicy. Since the meat doesn't contain much fat and, therefore, not much flavor, you need to combine it with a few simple add-ins to give things a boost. We dreamed up five flavorful mix-ins for the turkey burgers.

Mix-and-Match Turkey Burgers

Start with 1 pound of ground turkey breast (make sure it's breast meat and not the higher-fat "ground turkey") along with salt and pepper. Try any of the options below and serve on a whole-grain English muffin.

Yield: 4 burgers per pound of turkey meat

1. Sun-dried tomato and black olives (1/4 cup of each, finely chopped)

Toppings: Goat cheese (1/2 ounce per serving) and fresh arugula

2. Mango chutney (1/2 cup)

Toppings: Baby spinach and mayonnaise (1 teaspoon per serving)

3. Balsamic onions (1/2 cup chopped red onions sauteed with 2 teaspoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. Cool before adding to meat.)

Toppings: Provolone cheese (1 slice per serving) and sliced tomato

4. Barbecue sauce and chopped bell pepper (1/2 cup each)

Toppings: Cheddar cheese (1 slice per serving) and mixed greens

5. Black bean and chopped cilantro (1/2 cup each)

Topping: Sliced avocado
