Pike Place Market event focuses on farms, science

Seattle Times staff reporter

Take a swig of hard cider, nibble some cheese or bite into a strawberry and science likely isn't the first thought on your mind.

Washington State University hopes to make the public more aware of the research and technology behind the foods we enjoy by showcasing the relationships between farmers and scientists at an upcoming Pike Place Market public reception Sept. 14.

The Science of Foods event will pair farmers and other producers with WSU scientists whose research has helped battle pests, improve yields or otherwise aided their harvests.

The university's College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences also wants to highlight its role in helping small farmers find new markets for their crops.

"Those of us who love food know what a critical role farms play in sustaining communities and strengthening the bonds that we have with each other and with the land," said Rich Hines, assistant director for development with WSU Extension, a program that connects farmers with the university's resources.

Tickets for the evening reception are $25 and are available by calling 509-335-2243. Reservations should be made by today.

Local chefs will prepare appetizers with grass-fed beef, specialty cheeses and fresh vegetables, offer Washington wines, beers and ciders and create desserts that feature Washington berries. Some of the farmers and WSU scientists also will be available from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the market's organic-produce section to talk with the public.
