Buddhist relics on display
Today-Sunday: An exhibit of sacred relics of the Buddha and other Buddhist masters are featured in display cases encircling a life-size golden statue of the Maitreya Buddha. Now on a world tour, this collection was found among the cremation ashes of Buddhist masters and resembles pearl-like crystals. "Sharing Ramadan"
Wednesday: Local Muslim community members host a traditional Ramadan iftar, or fast-breaking dinner, for government representatives, interfaith leaders, law-enforcement officials and the public. During the monthlong Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from dawn to sunset. 6:30 p.m. registration and 7 p.m. program, Islamic School of Seattle, 720 25th Ave., Seattle; free, but seating is limited and RSVP required, 206-367-4081 and for additional information, www.cair.com.
Day of Peace
Friday: A candlelight vigil is the primary focus of the local observances of the United Nations' International Day of Peace. The event includes art projects for all, songs of peace, poetry readings, a world peace prayer ceremony and stories of hope. Area co-sponsors include Eastside Friends Meeting, Bellevue Community College student programs and the Church Council of Greater Seattle. Other observances are scheduled in Bremerton, Bainbridge Island and Seattle.
