Seattle Times short list of staffers' picks: "Gauguin and Polynesia" show at Seattle Art Museum and a Valentine's party for grouches at Silver Lake Winery in Woodinville.

'Flowers and Cats'
Something Paul Gauguin pined for in the tropics was a good old-fashioned English garden. He grew a plot of nontropical blooms in his little corner of Tahiti, and the painting he made of a vase of back-home flowers — and of two cats — is a personal moment amid the hothouse-hued "Gauguin and Polynesia" show at Seattle Art Museum (through April 29).

Party
'I Hate Valentine's Day!'
For the grouchy single set who finds Feb. 14 intolerable, I present the "I Hate Valentine's Day!"- themed event at Silver Lake Winery in Woodinville on Tuesday, with $4 wine and "broken-heart" cupcakes and other complimentary snacks. The winery will show the films "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and "27 Dresses." 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, 15029 Woodinville-Redmond Road, Woodinville (425-485-2437 or www.silverlakewinery.com).
