Weekend Preview: Seattle's Neighbor Appreciation Day
A lineup of entertainment options for the weekend of Feb. 10-12, 2012. On the list: Neighbor Appreciation Day in Seattle, Family Birding Walk at Juanita Bay Park in Kirkland and Wine & Chocolate tastings on Bainbridge Island. Films opening Friday include Denzel Washington's "Safe House," Rachel McAdams' "The Vow" and Madonna's "W.E."

Neighbor Appreciation Day, Seattle: 18th annual celebration at various locations, including "Family Nature Explorers" event at Magnuson Park; fire-stations open houses; Columbia City neighborhood town hall with Mayor Mike McGinn; and habitat-restoration projects at several sites Saturday (www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods).

"Oscar-Nominated Short Films, 2012": A collection of the short films nominated for Academy Awards this year. The live-action and animated shorts play on separate programs starting Friday at the Varsity.
"Safe House": Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in this new spy thriller. It has midnight previews Thursday, and opens Friday at several theaters.
"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island": This follow-up to 2008's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" features Josh Hutcherson and Dwayne Johnson on a search for a missing grandfather. It also has midnight previews Thursday, and opens Friday at several theaters (at many in 3-D).
"Pina": Win Wenders' 3-D documentary dance film/tribute to German choreographer Pina Bausch. It opens Friday at the Cinerama.
"The Vow": Channing Tatum stars in the romantic drama about a man trying to cope with his wife's (Rachel McAdams) severe memory loss. Directed by Michael Sucsy (the television version of "Grey Gardens"). It also has previews Thursday night and opens Friday at several theaters.
"W.E.": Madonna's directorial debut is a drama focusing on the relationship between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. It opens at the Seven Gables.
