Family says Spanish flamenco singer is brain dead

The family of one of Spain's leading flamenco singers, Enrique Morente, say he has been diagnosed as brain dead although his vital signs are stable.

MADRID —

The family of one of Spain's leading flamenco singers, Enrique Morente, say he has been diagnosed as brain dead although his vital signs are stable.

In a statement posted Monday on the Spanish performing artists and writers society website, the family said Morente, 67, went into a deep coma after being readmitted to Madrid's La Luz private hospital following an operation.

Daily El Mundo said the operation Dec. 4 was for an ulcer.

Admired for his constant efforts to modernize and innovate flamenco, Morente was the first flamenco artist to receive the Culture Ministry's National Music Award, in 1994.

He is married to dancer Aurora Carbonell. They have three daughters, one of them the immensely popular flamenco singer Estrella Morente.
