Fans declare 'Wild Things' king with $32.7M

Adult crowds who grew up on Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" turned the movie version of the beloved picture book into the weekend's top draw with $32.7 million.

Adult crowds who grew up on Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" turned the movie version of the beloved picture book into the weekend's top draw with $32.7 million.

Distributor Warner Bros. noted that despite its kid-friendly PG rating, Spike Jonze's "Wild Things" adaptation was a bigger hit with grown-ups than with family audiences.

The low-budget horror sensation "Paranormal Activity" continued doing big business as it widened to more theaters and climbed to No. 3 with $19.6 million.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:
