The Short List

What our writers love this week

Three things our writers love this week

TV

"Breaking Bad"

As season two of this amazing AMC drama comes to a close, it's clear why Bryan Cranston won the best actor Emmy last year. His portrayal of cancer sufferer/meth cooker/family man Walter White is raw, tense and soulful. Kudos to the writing staff and supporting cast, too (Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn and Dean Norris), who've all had a chance to shine this season. Emmy nominations all around, please. 10 tonight, AMC.

DVDs

"A Village Affair"

Fans of the addictive domestic novels of England's Joanna Trollope are rewarded with a pitch-perfect treatment of one in the 1995 TV film now on DVD, "A Village Affair." This romantic triangle is set in a sylvan country village and involves Sophie Ward's lovely, insecure Alice; her rich, aimless, beguiling new friend Clodagh (Kerry Fox); and Alice's husband, Martin (Nathaniel Parker) — whose ego shatters when Clodagh falls for Alice instead of him. Beautifully shot and acted, it's a winner.

Music

The Felice Brothers

On Thursday, this folk-rock foursome brings a gust of modern Americana to the Tractor — songs about Cooperstown, Penn Station and chickens on the run. Get a whiff at www.myspace.com/thefelicebrothers. For writer Jonathan Zwickel's interview with James Felice, see Your Monday in tomorrow's B section.
