Modest yet stylish corner storefront, where the air is heavily scented with cumin and cardamom. Carnivores show up for grilled marinated meats over basmati rice. Neighborhood vegetarians hanker for eggplant borani and delicate, ravioli-like ashak.

This extraordinary taverna is so Old World, so vigorously ethnic, it seems not quite of Seattle. Maybe it's the terra-cotta and the garlic strings; the Greek music and Hellenic wine list; the solidly Greek menu listing more than two dozen mezes (hors d'oeuvre spreads) along with traditional lamb, pork, chicken and prawn preparations. Or maybe it's the dozens of others relishing the place alongside you.
