The Short List
What our writers love this week
"Frost/Nixon," "Doubt," "The Dark Knight," "Milk" are among the early Oscar contenders.

Oscar hopefuls
I hear what you're all saying: Enough with James Bond and teenage vampires — what will the Oscar contenders be this year? Among the movies already released, those with Oscar hopes include "Milk," "Australia," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Changeling" and — on DVD Dec. 9 — "The Dark Knight." (Yes, Heath Ledger looks like a lock.) In the coming weeks, watch for these: "Frost/Nixon" (Dec. 12), a sure nomination for actor Frank Langella and possible for director Ron Howard; "Doubt" (Dec. 19), whispered as Meryl Streep's best chance to win an Oscar in years; "Revolutionary Road" (Jan. 2) and "The Reader" (Dec. 25), both featuring Academy favorite Kate Winslet (five nominations, no wins — yet); and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Dec. 25), which might give director David Fincher the nominations he should have gotten for "Zodiac."
