Turkfest works its magic at Seattle Center

Turkfest, a free Turkish cultural festival, takes place at Seattle Center Oct. 18-19.

Turkish cultural festival with arts, dancing, music and stories, noon-7:30 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday, Seattle Center House, 305 Harrison St, Seattle; free (www.turkfest.org).

If you stop by Seattle Center House this weekend and feel like you've landed in a foreign country, then Turkfest is once again creating its magic. The annual Turkish cultural festival is an entertaining and educational experience for the whole family, featuring Turkish music, arts, culture and history.

Let their hospitality get your day off to the right start with Turkish coffee in a traditional yurt. Then wander through a version of the Grand Bazaar, where you can find wondrous wares such as copper, pottery crafts and gold. An exhibition of folkloric costumes and authentic items of trousseau will be on display, plus storytelling of cross-generational tales of Turkey.

Also in the Turkfest plan: Whirling Dervishes, Turkish folk dancing and a Turkish dance party, set for 6:15-7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Center House.
