Video-game reviews | Shake up some fun in "Wario Land" or slide away with "Line Rider 2"

Video-game reviews of "Wario Land: Shake It!," "Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise" and "Line Rider 2: Unbound."

The Sacramento Bee

There's a whole lot of shaking and sliding going on in this week's video-game reviews.

All the games have an age rating of "E" for Everyone.

"Wario Land: Shake It!"

3 stars

Mario's rude counterpart from "Wario: Master of Disguise" is in the spotlight again with "Wario Land: Shake It!"

Wario is pulled into the Shake Dimension to search for prisoners and a bottomless bag of coins.

Players use the Wii Remote to pick up and shake treasure bags to see what pops out. Players can also shake the remote to cause quakes that topple enemies.

The game play is solid, not exceptional. The best part of "Shake It" is by far the visuals, which have the look of hand-drawn animation.

System and price: Nintendo Wii, $49.99

"Viva Piñata: Trouble In Paradise"

3 stars

"Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise" is aimed squarely at people who liked "Viva Piñata" and want more of the same. The game plays like the original, with some tweaks.

Players build a garden from scratch to attract adorable piñata animals to live there — and then breed them, sell them and use the proceeds to buy more things for the garden.

There are two new areas to visit outside the main garden, one desert and one arctic, each with new piñatas to capture or attract. The story mode has challenges for players to meet, and there's a new "Just for Fun" mode that sets players loose but keeps some of the piñatas locked away.

System and price: Microsoft Xbox 360, $39.99

"Line Rider 2: Unbound"

2.5 stars

"Line Rider 2: Unbound" is a puzzle game that lets a player run through numerous pre-made sled tracks or design his own.

Each track has gaps that the player must bridge with the right kind of line so a little guy on a sled can make it to the goal without stopping short of or overshooting it. Some lines can speed up or slow down the sled; others disappear after it passes or bounce the sled into the air.

The solutions are largely a matter of trial and error as a player tries to find the right arrangement of lines to reach the end — and ideally to pick up bonus items on the way.

The graphics are simple but effective; it's a cute game.

Systems and prices: PC, $19.99; Nintendo DS, $29.99
