Stefani has a 2nd son

Pop star and fashionista Gwen Stefani gave birth Thursday to a boy, Zuma Nesta Rock, said her publicist Dave Tomberlin, adding that "Mother, baby and family are all happy and healthy." Stefani, 38, has another son, Kingston, with her husband, rocker Gavin Rossdale. Rossdale also has a teenage daughter from another relationship.

Sanjaya is back on TV

Miss seeing Federal Way's own favorite "American Idol" reject Sanjaya Malakar on TV? He is featured in a new television ad for Nationwide Insurance as part of the company's latest campaign, "Life Comes at You Fast." In the ad, he travels to India to seek wisdom from a yogi. The enlightened teacher tells him he needs a retirement plan — and a haircut. The Nationwide campaign features other self-deprecatory ads by Kevin Federline, Fabio and MC Hammer.

Principal has new job

Joseph Sullivan, the former principal of a Massachusetts high school who told Time magazine there was a pact among some students to get pregnant, has a new job. The Gloucester Daily Times reported Thursday that Sullivan has been hired as principal of St. Joseph's School, a Catholic school in Wakefield for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Sullivan resigned last week from Gloucester High School after a furor over his comments about a surge in pregnancies among students.

3rd divorce for Arnold

Tom Arnold's divorce from his third wife, Shelby Roos, was finalized Tuesday. According to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Arnold, whose marriage lasted nearly five years, will pay Roos $15,000 a month in spousal support for 25 months. None of Arnold's marriages has passed the five-year mark: He and Roseanne Barr were married from '90 to '94, while he and Julie Champnella gave wedded bliss a whirl from '95 to '99.

Thurber Prize finalists

Larry Doyle, a former writer and producer for "The Simpsons"; Patricia Marx, a children's book author and former writer for "Saturday Night Live"; and Simon Rich, a former president of the Harvard Lampoon, are finalists for the Thurber Prize for American Humor, a $5,000 award. Doyle was nominated for "I Love You, Beth Cooper," his debut novel; Marx was cited for the novel "Him Her Him Again the End of Him"; and Rich for "Ant Farm," an essay collection. The Thurber Prize, named for author-illustrator James Thurber, was founded in 1996.

2 win Freedom Awards

Former Vice President Al Gore and civil-rights activist Diane Nash were named Tuesday as recipients of the National Civil Rights Museum's annual Freedom Awards. They will receive the awards at a banquet in Memphis in October. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968.

Passages

Leopoldo Serran, 66, the Brazilian screenwriter behind such 1970s art-house hits as "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands," and "Bye Bye Brazil," died Wednesday from liver cancer in Rio de Janeiro.

Edward Freeman, 80, a former Army helicopter pilot awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroics during the Vietnam War and portrayed in the movie "We Were Soldiers," died Wednesday in Boise from complications of Parkinson's disease.

Mark Lundberg, 50, an opera singer whose voice was so versatile he was able to compete as a bass, baritone and tenor, died Friday at a New York hospital. The cause of death wasn't released.
