"Angel" takes action

Actress Drew Barrymore, 33, was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in West Hollywood, Calif., on Monday but was not injured, authorities said Tuesday. Barrymore, whose credits include the "Charlie's Angels" films, followed the hit-run vehicle and got its license-plate number, and police are trying to track down the driver.

Rapper gets prison time

A weeping Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday for shooting a woman outside a New York nightclub. "I feel so bad for all the physical and mental pain you've gone through," the Grammy-nominated rapper told the victim in court. The entertainer — real name Remy Smith — had faced up to 25 years for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion for shooting Makeda Barnes Joseph last July in a dispute over money.

Actor James Garner, 80, who was hospitalized late last week after suffering a minor stroke, is doing well and should be going home shortly, the veteran television and film star's publicist said Tuesday.

More than chitchat

Sue Simmons, news anchor for New York's WNBC-TV, dropped an expletive on startled viewers Monday night, leaving thousands gasping and probably the same number laughing. An industry source confirmed Tuesday that Simmons directed the expletive at longtime co-anchor Chuck Scarborough during a "tease" for the 11 p.m. news; viewers couldn't see his reaction because a shot of a cruise ship was on screen when Simmons yelled, "What the ... are you doing?" He returned solo to the air about 20 minutes later for another tease, although both anchors were on the 11 p.m. broadcast, where Simmons apologized.

A Detroit-based group hopes to use empty shipping containers to build a $1.8 million, 17-unit condominium project. The Detroit Free Press reported the project would stack empty containers four high, cut in windows and doors, install plumbing, stairways and heating, and add amenities such as balconies and landscaped patios. Groundbreaking could take place this fall if the project wins city approval. Developers plan to offer units measuring 960 to 1,920 square feet. Prices will range from $100,000 to $190,000.

Church has faith in fuel

The First Baptist Church of Snellville, Ga., is fueling its membership drive with a sign proclaiming "Free Gasoline." There's a catch. Newcomers or members get a pink raffle ticket for a chance to win one of two $500 gas cards every time they attend a church event during a Sunday-to-Wednesday revival. "We don't know how far it will go with these soaring prices," said Rusty Newman, the church's senior pastor. "But it may make someone's night." Newman's congregation has roughly 9,000 members, but only about 2,500 regularly attend Sunday services.
